Valk, your dog, my dog and everyone's dog will follow commands given by someone else too, so, since I live with people, my family, my dog needs to be able to follow simple commands given by them as well as me.
I know exactly where you are going with this, its that old style macho attitude, "my dog listens to me and me ONLY" and such BS.
Of course, you missed the point entirely when I described what I did with my son 20 years a go. The point was Valk, that the dog is working to satisfy its own drives, THAT is the kind of dog I am interested in, the one that will take direction from its handler who is fair to the dog and the dog knows and understands this well through experience and also understands that following that direction, call it command if you want, will allow the dog to satisfy its own genetic drives.
Now, going back to the dog listening to me and only me, bring me a dog, any dog, it will listen to me as well, not as readily and as happily as its own handler, but, it will follow simple commands.

Smokin Joe if you feed raw and want a healthy treat for your dog buy yourself a dehydrator (hope I'm saying it right) like the ones used for dehydrated fruits and put small pieces of meat or organs. It would take a few hours to be ready but once dehydrated corectly you can store them for weeks at room temperature, no need for a freezer. Pay attention that the meat is fat free, fat meat won't store so well and will become spoiled pretty quickly. It is also a good idea as an alternative way of feeding your dog while away on vacation with him. Or you can buy dehydrated healthy treats from pet stores. I bought mine dehydrated pieces of beef heart from Zooplus (this is in Europe). Mine are on raw too, but dehydrated meat is something they would die for LOL.

Valk you're right saying that dogs are scavangers and if it were the case many should be able to find food on their own and survive. I have a friend that a few months ago adopted a stray 5 year old, show line GS bitch. That bitch was on her own for over an year, providing food for herself by hunting or eating from people ' s garbage, was very thin and 7 weeks pregnant. Even after being adopted and fed properly she still hunts pigeons and eats them. And she hunts cats (and if hungry enough probably would eat them, too).

I always worry there might be too much onion added in things like that, BE.

Bladedge, I'm sorry, I thought it sounded like you were being snippy and trying to clear the path for 'serious only' discussions /posters; there's a history !

You have to read the lables. Great Value Homestyle only has Garlic Powder, no Onions and it's pretty low on the ingredient list. Other than that I use Kibble, Happy Howies, Natural Balance or Red Barn Food Rolls. Hot Dogs, Wienerle (yeah, we can get them here too) or whatever else is of value to the dog.

Farmdogs are an entirely different ballgame than sport dogs or even detection dogs. They need a high level of reinforcement and you cant train one without a food or toy reward.

Those going for a high level of precision usually use food because you get more repetition and better precision out of the dog.

As for people being “full of BS” ... sometimes I wonder with some people what world they live in. Generalizing and Proofing behaviors isn't a small task and takes time. Most people think they have generalized behaviors and they really dont.

As for the question whether or not someone wants to have dogs given commands by someone other than yourself. Yes, I have to be able to hand my dogs off to someone else. Its not a bad thing when a dog can function for someone other than yourself!

B. E not sure why you referred to me??

by ValK on 16 October 2020 - 15:10

hired, why you always looking for some hidden meaning in my posts? i'm not kind of person to be hesitant and keep back what is on my mind.
when i asked about your view on the dog, who respond and execute command from people other than the dog's master, there weren't any "such BS" as you expressed it.

"Baerenfangs Erbe
Generalizing and Proofing behaviors isn't a small task and takes time."

different breeds was developed for different purpose. in withing some breeds the selection done for more narrowed and specialized tasks but that shouldn't change the breed overall. unfortunately not the case with GSD.

so you're ok. if dog who being send to apprehend, do switch to other command, given by object of apprehension?
or the guide dog walk its blind handler into traffic because someone told that dog to go?

Valk, if that is the case, my apology for my BS comment. I have never known a dog sent on an apprehension change its mind because someone screamed something else.
Many have screamed before and during the bite, the only purpose it served was to get the dog to bite harder. Its not just the verbal command that makes dog bite, its the actions of the subject, the noises being made, the entire scene is charged and the dog feels this.
In most cases Valk, if you look at LE dogs work, they have a hard time releasing when their handler is verbally telling them to do so.
There are many reasons for that and too long of a subject to get into, but, no, I have never seen a dog being commanded by the subject to stop biting and the dog obeying. Subjects do scream many things, none of which can be printed here because of language issues.

Now, remember that apprehensions are a tiny part of what a dog does, nose work, detection is the bulk of it and for that, different methods and attitudes are needed.
In the last two days, I have read two articles in the news condemning the use of police dogs for apprehension purposes and there are groups who are trying to completely remove any sort of biting police dogs out of work.

B. E not sure why you referred to me??

If you mean the quote, that was Hundmutter referring to you, I believe? It was just the quote I took to answer her meatball question about Onions. LOL
Because I fullheartedly agree with your observation that some people likely never trained a dog let alone generalized and proofed behavior.

so you're ok. if dog who being send to apprehend, do switch to other command, given by object of apprehension?
or the guide dog walk its blind handler into traffic because someone told that dog to go?

Sooooooo,  what happens if you are out with your dog, you are going down and nobody can get to you because your dog is "guarding" since nobody can touch him? I can tell you what happens. You have a dead dog. Just because a dog can be handled by someone else, doesn't mean he's going to listen to commands when he's already performing a job.

What happens if disabled person passes out and the SD can't be handled by someone other than the disabled person? Especially as a disabled person the dog has to be able to be handled by someone other than you. That doesn't mean your dog is going to respond to someone giving him a command while YOU are handling the dog. I'm not quite sure how you are even coming up with these type of scenarios.
