Big Mac will turn 4 years old this July and we are getting serious about buying a bitch to breed with him.  I have a lot of farm experience with breeding/delivering hogs, cattle, and goats but our dogs always get bred without any planning.  So, I would appreciate some input.

When would be appropriate to first breed a female American Bulldog?  Second heat?

Mac has a big head!  An imageIs this likely to make for a difficult birthing?

...And health testing, and pre-selling pups so they don't end up in shelters, and making a whelping area, and, and...

If you are going out to buy a bitch for your existing male, does that not equal some sort of "planning" ? In which case why not plan a bit more ?

The right time to breed any maiden bitch may vary, according to that bitch herself and her development. For some its ideal to start AFTER the second heat (ie @ the third season); for others who have matured quickly and maybe come into heat a bit further in their development, the second heat can be ideal. BUT especially if you are worried about head size (& possibility of problems and caesarians and all that goes with that) I would pick a bitch, or wait with one, that you are sure has fully bodily matured. Cheaper for you; kinder for the female.

And it would give you time to check out all the appropriate Health testing stuff.

In case you wouldn´t care you wouldn´t ask. Think about your hogs, cattle, and goats - which ones do you breed, and more important, WHY?
No difference with dogs - the specimen fitting the breed standard should be bred, the others should be beloved dogs ( and that´s not bad ).
Try to find out as much as possible about the breed ( conformation, health, temperament ) and THAN decide if you want to breed this dog or not.
Kind regards

Do you know ANYTHING about bulldogs?? I seriously can't believe you'd ask that question if you do!

The reason the American bulldog split with the British bulldog is the British bulldog has such a large head and small pelvis that natural reproduction is all but impossible. Things are somewhat better with the American breed, but I'm pretty sure there's still a large number of C-sections due to the pups having large heads.

Never consider breeding an AB before her 3rd heat as this breed is slow to mature. Don't consider breeding unless your dog is clear for OFA or Penn Hip scores. Don't consider breeding unless your dogs are clear for NCL, Itchiosis and for some lines heart conditions.
Any titles on the male? Conformation, obedience, IPO? anything? What are you planning to do with your puppies? Do you already have a lit of potential buyers? Or will you be selling them on craig's list?
What are your goals with this or any litter?
Breeding is a lot more then two dogs having sex in the back yard. And farm animal experience so far doesn't see to = dog breeding experience.
There is a lot more info needed then just how old should be bitch be for a breeding.
I bred one litter, lots of thing went badly and i now feel that i will be getting my next dogs from people that actually know and have deep knowledge of the dogs in their line and how to breed them. If nothing else seek a mentor for your planned project.

FYI, Fury my latest puppy came from a breeder i have been watching for over 5 years. She just posted the other night that one of her females had to go in for a C-section because the first puppy got stuck. (usually the biggest puppy comes first!) and 15 puppies later, they only lost the first one. she's now sworn once that litter is weaned that female is getting spayed because each of her litters have been in the teens. 13, 14, and now 15 puppies. Talk about sleepless nights!
