If there’s anyone who is thinking about letting their female whelp a new litter, and your a newbie like me that’s never done this before, PLEASE trust me when I tell you that these rails that go around a whelping box that people call “pig rails” will absolutely save your puppies life !
Just the times I’ve noticed since my female gave birth to her four puppies last Tuesday, I’ve seen at least six or seven times that I walked out there where a puppy was between the back of her and the corner or side of the whelping box but she could not crush or smother them because of the pig rails !.. you might would think the puppy would scream and she would hear if she sat on them.... but if they’re tiny and they have no air I doubt they can scream very loud, anyway I can’t tell you how glad I am that I put these rails around the side of my whelping box, they have literally been a lifesaver for these puppies. I just walked in from seeing it again and wanted to sit down and post this real quick.

Would prefer a wider rail but if yours is working for you then fine. Puppies are looking fine, does your female have a good supply of milk? kinda hard to see in this photo.

I used the standard size 2x2 (inch) rail. that one seems pretty close to that.

later on I started using the kiddie pools that can be bought at almost any big box store in the U.S. the sides have enough give give so as to provide protection against getting squashed. and they were cheap enough that I got 2 so I could just switch them out daily for cleaning.

I also lined them with indoor/outdoor carpet for good traction for the pups and also easy cleaning.

Those rails stick out 2 inches all the way around the side, and about 4 inches off the ground, I was already going this morning to the lumber store to get material that I’m going to extend it out another 2 inches all the way around, so that will give them 4 inches...it’s going to make my box smaller on the inside but it’ll be OK I guess.. I spent a lot of money on this box building it to make it just right insulated floor and other things but I should’ve built it larger. It’s 4‘ x 4‘ inside but then you have to take off the space for the pig rails.

Oh yeah she’s producing a lot of milk, they look like fat little Jimmy Dean sausages packs ! they’re so fat when they roll they don’t have feet that stick out far enough yet to keep them from rolling 😊

She’s definitely got her appetite back and going to the bathroom good, I’m putting cottage cheese in with her food to give her the extra calcium that she needs.

A friend of mine used ABS drain pipe for whelping rails. It worked well!

And really you don't have to worry about them getting stepped on for too long however, they do love to lay and snuggle under the rails even when they get bigger so they do serve you well.

ABS pipe has asbestous in it. Not good once puppies start chewing on it.

Nan, that was back in the Dark Ages.  ABS pipes are made from a plastic resin:  ABS pipe and fittings are made from a thermoplastic resin called Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS for short).  Before ABS came along, some sewer pipes were made of a cement mixture containing asbestos.
