I am rarely willing to make the trek to another county, or the next state, to buy pumpkin at a regular grocery store. Besides, it costs a lot more at regular stores.
I like to add into the house Cur's & little Fluffy dogs food. One 15 ounce can gets split over usually 3-4 days, twice a month. If any of the ranch dogs are here they get some too. Everyone seems to love it.
I will buy a years supply now. The local store manager knows I do this, so always orders extra cases.
There are several brands of canned pumpkin sold specifically for dogs. Even dried pumpkin powder. More money than I am willing to spend, when I can plan ahead & buy the store brand for $1 a can at a dollar store.
Purina even did an E-Blast today about feeding dogs pumpkin, sweet potatoes & hazelnuts. I have never thought of feeding hazel nuts. Though if I did, I would put into the coffee grinder, I have dedicated for flax seed only, & grind it up with the flax. Thus any choking or gut/bowel obstruction issues would be a non issue.
Just thought I best mention this, I do not feed canned pumpkin pie mix, which contains added sugars & spices. I feed just plain old boring canned pumpkin.
I never buy canned sweet potatoes for the dogs. Around here it is all "candied." Sweet potatoes are already sweet enough, let alone adding in more sugar sources! Once in a blue moon I might bake a sweet potato for them.

as i understand, you're living in rural area thus have no lack of land.
why won't you plant pumpkins to have supply for year round? particularly that that harvested pumpkin can be stored for quite long time even without special treatment.

I always tell other dog owners how much better/easier it is than rice for digestive issues.
