$20,000 USD is all up including puppy price (which is only around $2500USD), flights, blood work, quarantine, board and training etc. The high price is due to our strict quarantine laws unfortunately and flight price during covid is very high too.

I don't know where you are, but I just imported a dog from Europe to the USA and the fee including flight and customs was approximately 1500 Euro/1800USD. You mention quarantine, are you in AUS? Also "board and training" mmmmmmm sorry scam alert. My puppy had to stay with her breeder for a few months due to covid rules and they charged me not one extra cent. I sent them food money anyway, but that was only a few hundred euro just to help out. "Board and train" is the biggest scam in the dog world in general but for a breeder charging 20K for a puppy with compromised genetics, I just don't have words for this.

No dog is worth that amount of money unless a full trained, validated working dog such as a narcotics detection/patrol dog, international MBIS winner, World champion IGP etc. And that would be with no genetic red flags and full breeding rights. And even then, 20K.....that's a LOT.

20K for a puppy??? You can import a fully train with multiple titles, working bred, DNA tested, x-ray, kkl1 dog from anywhere in Europe for a lot less. 20K pup and 6months on down the road you may or may not have that one special dog. Yes the shipping is high now and totally ridiculous imho. But do not pay 20k for a pup. I have owned 8 GSD and have imported from Germany and Czech Rep. in the past.

As P.T. Barnum so aptly put it, a sucker is born every minute...

You can buy a showlines GSD IGP titled from the youth class that finished 10th at the German Sieger Show for less than that.

Say you buy an Italian violin with good provenance for $20,000. Hold on to it for 15 years and most likely you will be able to sell it for much more than that...same usually holds true for real estate or paintings depending on the market, but at least you will get something back.

Buy a dog for $20,000 and what do you have after 15 years? A dead dog. Assuming you were able to get $1000 per breeding and you bred your dog 20 times you still would not be breaking even given food, upkeep, vet bills etc. Buying a dog for that kind of price or more is merely an exercise in vanity, like lighting a cigar with 100 dollar bills...impressive, but ultimately not very clever.

Do you live some country where you cannot get a puppy of similar or approximate quality. If so, do so. There are so many things that can go wrong with any import even at normal prices. I can tell you stories of dogs being sold by so-called respective GSD breeders in Germany, some who were SV judges and "things" happened... including switcheroos in which a different dog was sent from the one that was wanted. And the money is always put up first and never refunded.

Final thought, caveat emptor.

OK everyone...the puppy is not $20,000 everyone needs to READ the post!

The puppy is $2,500 !

The extra fees are quarantine, blood work, veterinary costs, flights, importation costs from an agency helping us, and foundation training while waiting for flights.

So to make it simple for everyone here is the breakdown:

Puppy $2500
Quarantine $1900
Import permits and help with paperwork: $1600
Flights are $9000
Board and Train, blood, vet, food is $5,000 for 8 months work while waiting for mandatory health testing and time to clear.

TOTAL: $20,000 ALL UP FOR EVERYTHING.

I AM IN NEW ZEALAND and personally know another breeder who got a puppy recently from Europe and cost was all very similar. and no, i am not rich, I have had to take a LOAN FROM A BANK! Other people might take loans for cars, or motorbikes or a holiday but i love German Shepherds, they are our HOBBY, so have decided to spend my money on that.

My concern is the LTV-MILD. Over here we dont know much about it, ive been doing research and found this out. Noone here tests for this.

obvious someone trying to take advantages of you.
what is "Quarantine $1900"? is that means pup will have personal penthouse with servants who will monitor does pup wear the mask and provide to pup menu with black caviar and champagne to justify $5000 bill for food?

Import permits and help with paperwork $1600?
Now, I understand the Europeans are experts at making putting a dog on a plane absolutely more trouble and expense than it needs to be, but honestly, that is ridiculous.
Flight $9000? If you flew up to get the dog and took it back with you as cargo I suspect you could cut that price in half? IDK, I don't live in New Zealand, but honestly, this looks a bit padded.
Bottom line, you can do better than a dog with a known health issue.

If you are going to wait 8 months, you best fly over there yourself and look at the dog. First, as a previous poster wrote, you will save a lot of money taking the dog back as cargo.

And just as important, you are putting up money for a blind...that is to say an unknown result. No one can guarantee what the result will be from any mating. You breed a sieger to a siegerin and you can get nothing. I know famous breeders who have done it and got that result. You can repeat a great litter and not get the same result. Mating a good producing male who has produced good litters with different females is still no guarantee. And how do you know you will get the best one of the litter....the Germans are notorious for not giving away the best of a litter, especially to someone they do not know or who is not coming to see the whole litter...You should go see the litter to make sure you are getting what you want.

$2500 is actually cheap for a 8 month old GSD showline. Working lines, that is probably a fair price from the Czech republic or Austria, or Poland. You have to ask yourself why this litter. Obviously you think the proposed mating dogs are just what you want, but again there is no guarantee. But if this is a must have litter and you are willing to take the risk that it could be a bust, then okay go ahead, but to buy sight unseen is really risky unless you are personal friends with the breeder and even then. Finally, for all of those expenses and you know that there is LTV in the lines, I would think that is a deal breaker...

I am not familiar with breeders in NZ, but I can tell you there are some very good ones in Australia, show and working lines, and you will save yourself a lot of money and potential heart ache by going that route....

Amen to what Klossbruhe just posted. I expect you know that New Zealand also has a GSD fraternity, some of which closely follow the 'Germanic' side of the breed ? Have they really nothing to offer you, that you seek to take this gamble ?
