Thank you all for your input - truly fascinating. So much information and experience out there. Will keep an eye on Xambi and Dana and let you know how they get on.

ECHO--i knew about grapes being toxic, but not onions....if onions are cooked , like in a roast..are they still toxic?
by Langhaar on 26 August 2007 - 07:08
Onions are toxic whether cooked or raw they cause haemolytic anaemia, it is dose dependent. Therefore avoid anything with onions in!

Learning lots from this thread! I didn't know about onions either.
Just to add to my comments about the nettle eating - Xambi was down the field about 6 am this morning and went to the nettle patch where she proceeded to carefully select the nettle leaves to eat. She favoured the smaller, younger leaves which I presume are more tender? But she did go further down the stem and selected one from several ones of similar size. No bile today (in fact she only did that once) and she's full of beans. I'm finding it fascinating!

I had a German Shepherd that liked to slurp up the soap suds from my husband's Irish Spring soap! She'd visit him in the bathroom every morning to get her morning 'fix'! The vet saw no harm in it, so we didn't try to stop her.

One of mine used to eat nettles as well made me cringe every time I saw her do it.
Never saw any side affects though.
Here is a link to a site that lists all plants poisonous to dogs.

I had a couple of Rotts that would go out and find hornets nests and roll in them. THey were years apart and not closelt related, but that is about as weird as I have seen.
