I got a Nikon D40x for Christmas. I take my photos in high resolution from the edge of the field so that they can be cropped and edited as need be. Here is an example: this photo was cropped, resized and lightened. Dark dog on a pure white background is a tough picture.

I ran across this photo sequence and thought people might be interested. Ok, the "German Shepherd" in the series may have one in his lineage a few generations back, but who's counting:

You definitely need a good lens, will make a huge difference. I have a Nikon D80 now, had a D40 before and still use the same lens. Here are a few shots I took...

Yes' Its the Lens that makes the Picture, and to that end a cheapy that comes with the Camera is not good enough for this sort of pictures
I want to video my Dogs in action this way i can see what mistakes we are making, Like Obedinace little things wrong will meaning losing points a Camera cannot pick these up
so instead of buying a top Lens i will get video job instead not that i know anything about them so any tips on what or not to buy and look for will be appreciated

Molly- You HAVE a great camera! this was taken with a Sony CyberShot on Saturday, fixed (non-changeable) lense. Not as expensive as your Nikon, which I would give my eye teeth for. LOL . I was actually running, so I guess this qualifies as an action shot.

Not hitting the sleeve but you can see the teeth.
Taken with a Canon 350D with kit lens from about 10m.
