Sounds very like Juvenile Pyoderma (Puppy Strangles) I had a puppy develop this a couple of years ago she was one of a litter of five and the only one affected. She was treated with Antirobe, Rilexine and Prednisolone and made a full recovery.

I found this web site most helpful  www.affieloverbreedclubs.co.uk  Yes it is an Afghan hound site but very informative.

Best of luck with your puppies

puppy strangles , pups must go to the vet  !! I had one years ago and a simple procedure draining the fluid and puss out was life saving !!! This pup grew up to a heatly adult I sold to a family in my neighborhood and turned 13 years old  :))

Thank you for all of the knowledgable information.  We just got back from our vet.  He is not certain that it was puppy strangles, although we did drain abscesses on 2 puppies and put them all on antibiotics.   Not sure how they got the infections either.  The whelping box has no sharp edges and is kept very clean in my laundry room.  I have never had such an incident in any other litter, but I've never had one so large either.  The mother refuses to move the pups with her mouth, therefore she has quite a time finding a place to lay down when they have all spread out.  I think that it is possible that she may have stepped on a few accidentally, but still doesn't explain why the infection was in the same place with each pup.

Perhaps we will never have the complete answer, but I am happy to say that they look as though they should make a complete recovery.

Thank you again.

Be sure to check out this link: http://www.affieloverbreedclubs.co.uk/pyoderma.htm

From this discussion, it appears that pred and cephalexin are the treatment of choice.

There are serious consideration about using such dogs for breeding and warnings to delay further vaccinations until the immune system regains its strength.
