Cats, Number ONE defense. Some cats are better than others.

Hav-a-harts work, very well, if you're into roadtrips with rodents, or kid projects.

Peanut butter, works best on the the old fashioned, tried and true.

Don't like poisons, because you don't know where the carcass ends up at.

The humane traps (Lowes has them) actually work very well, but once in the trap, you have to take the little guys for a ride. You need to relocate them at least 10 miles away. I know, call me crazy, but I love all animals. As for cats, some are good mousers, but others couldn't care less about catching mice! Of course, as many have mentioned, try to find where they are getting in and plug up the opening.

Cats are great mousers, females are the best. If you don't want or can't have a cat, get a rat terrier. I never saw a mouse when I had rat terriers.

Thanks everyone, but a cat or small dog is not an option as The Management live loose in the house and would not tolerate it. I have set traps (no catch yet) but since I didn't know the mouse was in here until I found the nest, I am thinking more of something to put in the cupboard that would make a mouse feel uncomfortable there to deter another one from moving in. My books are very old and irreplaceable.

tHE BEST SOLUTION OF ALL IS THE ELECTRONIC PLUG IN S THAT YOU BUY BY SUNBEAM AND GE...IN THE ELECTRICAL DEPT OF LOWES,,,, WALMART , BIG LOTS, TARGET , ANY TRACTOR SUPPLY i HAVE THREE IN EVERY ROOM AND SOME HAVE A PLUG IN ON THE SIDE FOR USE OF ANOTHER APPLIANCE..i HAEVE 6 OF THEM IN NURSERY AND i DO USE MOTH BALLS IN MY NURSERY.....THE SMELL OF THEM KEEPS LOTS OF THINGS AWAY.....LOL

nOW WITH DE IN THE BARN AND THE NURSERY, i HAVE NONE....NEIGHBORS LEFT A MESS ON THE LOT NEXT DOOR,,,MOVED AND LEFT DOGS AND TRASH...SO I HAVE A LOT OF WATCHING TO DO.

i ALSO USE A LOT OF MARIGOLDS AND FLOWERING THEY DONT LIKE...WOULD LOVE TO GET A CAT TO KEEP SNAKES AWAY BUT DOGS WOULDN'T LET THEM STAY..

EVERYNOW AND THEN ONE GETS IN BARN AND MY SON HAS TRAPS SET....I AM NOT TOUCHING THEM SO HE DOES IT WHEN HE COMES TO VISIT....I HAVE NO INTENTION OF TOUCHING ONE OR LIVING IN A HOUSE WITH A MOUSE IN IT...

SON DOES THE BUG SPRAYING AND NOW WITH DE I AM SEEING EVEN JUNE BUGS DIE ON THE PORCH AND PATIO...

Bleach - just wipe it around the area they are settling in or entering the building.

I had a huge rat problem up until recently, moth balls in the ceiling worked instantly but they were still in the walls at night, so bought one of those plug ins, against by better judgement thinking there is no way this will work , wellllllll it does not one sign or sound form a rat, mouse and even spider since, safe for the dogs and cat as well

Snake skin.

My son has a ball python and we took her shed skin hunks and put them around the garage. Works great. You can go to a reptile shop and ask for shed skin, be sure to keep the supply reasonably fresh (don't leave it there for a year LOL) and change the places you put it. I've even had it work for the darn terrorist bunnies that hide out under our front porch. Use skin from snakes that generally eat mice, apparently the smell of the mice diet gets into the snake's skin and other mice smell it and run for the hills. Good luck
