Mungo (Park) was the intrepid Scottish Explorer, one of the first (white Europeans) to penetrate the African interior and report out on the miseries of the slave trade.
(Paul) Morphy was the brilliant American chess prodigy who was the best player in the world in the mid 19th century.
Maxwell was the great physicist who laid the groundwork for Einstein.
Moby (Dick) for a big male puppy! Or Melville if you are a literary sort.
Malthus was perhaps the most prescient social analyst of the 19th century -- anticipating the overcrowding and famine that will be hitting us by 2050-2070 -- predicting it before 1820.
John Stuart Mill was the brilliant economist and social reformer (promoted women's rights very early) of the early to mid 19th century. Also stood up for the central idea of liberty and the individual.
Of course, just plain old Max for our founder, the Captain.

And Michael the Archangel. Not a bad job for a shepherd dog.
Madison wasn't a bad founding father, and Monroe was a smart and decent president.
I personally don't respect Millard Fillmore, but he was apparently quite handsome for a president.
In the presidential vein, there is also McKinley. And you can later claim you named the pup after Mt. McKinley if you change your mind.
I will get to female names later...
