The military base may want to do their own vaccinations when I register Cam on base. They are strict about everything! He will also have to be microchipped. He is due for rabies, but I have been holding off because I knew we were moving on base. I didnt want to get it done just in case they tried to make me redo it.

Steph I wouldn't adopt a cockroach to her. I am like Moons I pretty much go with my gut feelings. If I felt I had to check every reference in the book then you're no candidate for any dog much less one of mine.

Altho I will throw this in. I sold a dog on a co ownership to someone on this board. I don't know if they still come on here and I don't care. But if they do I hope they read this. I liked the person from the beginning. She was going to take my dog and make everything in the world out of it. She offered references, I never took them. Wish I had now because after I FINALLY got my poor thin filthy dog back--with a big scar from fighting, I did do some checking and found out what a lier she was. She is also a hypocondriac and a prescription drug abuser. The dog came back to me in sad shape, as I have already said , both physically and mentally. If anyone wishes to know who this person is please pm me because I would not reccomend her to have a dog PERIOD. Bottom line is we can all be fooled.

I don't do all the shots either except for rabies but I know my vet would give one an excellent reference on me because I do work with him. OFAs, puppy checks, etc.

I too, would not let this person get nothing. I let my dogs be the best judge of people. They may fool me enogh to get to the house, but the dogs usually give it up once they get here. If I have a bad feeling on the phone, I have no problem telling them to look else where. Go with the gut feeling first!

Yeh, I usually go with my gut feel too, and I am ignoring this app, she applied to all the rescues in Washington and they won't adopt to her either, I finally got ANOTHER email saying she is going to go to a breeder because we won't adopt to her, let her go, guess we will get the dog back into rescue after she has ruined it and not trained it...darn, oh well...maybe I won't be doing this then....lol
She actually put on her app that she got rid of the 2 dogs, I guess one of the other rescues, checked her facebook account, I  am not that inovative, and she is wishing the coyotes would eat her cats so she wouldn't have to feed them, how sic can an individual be??? Darn SAD!!!! I just refused her because of the dogs being rehomed, mainly because she didn't train them....oh well.

I am not a breeder but foster for a rescue and yes we do check vet references.  First of all, if the applicant already has or has had a pet, there's no reason they shouldn't have a vet lined up.  The lady who checks the applications calls the vet and just makes sure that all current pets are up to date on rabies because that is a legal issue here.  Beyond that we aren't going to check every single check-up and get on people's cases for not bringing their healthy indoor cat to the vet twice a year just because or anything like that.  My vaccine protocol is different than what the rescue does with their puppies but it hasn't been an issue.  As long as my dogs have a valid rabies certificate and county license, I'm OK to foster and adopt.  We make the call based on other aspects of fit and lifestyle but the person does need to understand that they have to at least have a vet lined up if something happened.

I used to do vet references when I adopted out my dogs. I just didnt find to be effective. I had someone who used the same vet as I did, had good references, BUT she NEVER took the dog I adopted to her to the vet and when she returned the dog, he had an ear infection so bad that I could smell his ears as he walked by me.

My best references were other rescues and Im sure you know that the nut cases are usually on radar with groups. I have contacted groups I didnt know by going through Petfinder and emailing them. I found that to be good, my intuition  the best. And I have asked adopters if they are coming to me from another state, just why that is especially if their state is full of dogs.
