My trainer's late WG working-lines dog was quite "lean-chested" and likely a few percentage points below the FCI/SV ideal. He survived bloating at age 6 and had his stomach stapled in the hope of preventing any further incidents, but bloated again at age 9 and had to be put down. My sense is that no one really knows which individual dogs or lines might be predisposed to bloat (or even if there is such a predisposition), and that there isn't much that can be done until the science catches up.

...just amazing what comments pop-up.... "barrel chested" dogs are more prone according to "the experts"....GSD are not considered "deep nor barrel chested" as a breed. Bloat occurs in most larger breeds PERIOD. It is also INCORRECT for the GSD to have a NARROW or SHORT chest....they call it "improper briscuit proportions." Chris...very nice explanation! p59teitel...sorry to hear about your friend's dog..tragically..not enough is known about bloat...you are correct.

Amazing, indeed. Quite honestly why I rarely post on these kinds of forums anymore. crhuerta is absolutely correct. Always sad to lose a special dog.

Thanks, Robin! I completely agree with you and p59teitel. KCzaja, you are absolutely right. I don't post much here anymore either. But I could not let this remark about Flipp slide, so I had to say something. He was a great dog and as close to the standard as possible. This board has certainly changed. What happened to all these nice and knowledgable people who used to post here up to two years or even one year ago? Have a great weekend everybody, Chris
