While I'm at work my GSD stays in his outdoor kennel, but as soon as I get home I let him out and he hangs out with us in the house.  We never had to coax him to get on the couch or the bed - he hopped up as soon as he was old enough to reach.  He gets food in his kennel each morning but doesn't eat much till evening when we bring in his bowl and put it in his feeding spot in the living room.

Chaco is officially part of the family unit and he comes with us when we go mountain biking and backpacking, our favorite leisure time fun.

However, he does sleep in a crate in the living room at night.  My husband and I are newlyweds and it's terribly distracting to have a dog trying to... um... join the fun.  ;)

Well, mine started out in the house but we temporarily rent and as they have been growing, my husband decided we would keep them in the kennels so as not to worry the landlord (he's not much on dogs).  My kennels have tops on them and the vinyl kennel floors for keeping them clean.  They have heated doghouses in the winter.

My problem is that my husband (as I've posted in previous posts) believes dogs have their place.  He has now become set in his ways that the dogs should stay outside in their kennels, even after we move into our house.  So, I'm putting together in my mind just how my brand new kennels will look, (complete with heating, air conditioning, the kennel building with running water, electric, proper drainage system).  Yeah, it's gonna cost him!

They free feed in their kennels.  They are only in the kennels while we sleep and while we're away.  Other than that, they are always out in the yard and go as many places with us as possible.  We spend most of our waking moments outside anyway.  We have the wireless fence system and I have to admit, as much as I don't care for the e collars, the dogs learned very quickly not to go past their boundaries.  However, I don't believe I'd trust this fence if we weren't home or if the dogs felt challenged.  But, since we are just renting temporarily, we did not want to put a permanent fence on their property.

If I had my way (like I did BEFORE husband), my dogs WOULD be in the house with me but, would not be allowed on the furniture.
