iluvmyGSD,
I posted some years back about the DE, and it sounds like everyone has had great experiences with it since that time. :) I found out about it when I went to Hawaii, and a lady there used it for her horses and there were NO FLIES to be seen (in HAWAII!!!!)
You can purchase it at your feed stores, or can buy it online. PERMA GUARD is what I have used and would recommend it. Here is a link, but there ARE cheaper places to purchase it:

Yes, BORAX is boric acid. It would be okay around dog kennels, as long as they cannot eat it in bulk. :) It is also safe for kids to play around. It is nowhere nearly as toxic as permethrin, etc.

Yellowrose,
Thank goodness I haven't had a flea on an animal in over fifteen years, but DE is used in organic garden's here for keeping slugs away, their slimey bodies can't take getting shredded by the stuff. But I never knew about human grade DE, or using it for ticks and flies. This time of year, the flies are a big nuisance for some reason.
