As for dogs looking good on lesser quality foods, I had someone tell me the other day something that made sense. You could take a whino off the street, basically a drunk street bum...make him look good on the outside, clean him up, give him a haircut and a new outfit, but would you want his liver?  BASICALLY meaning, just because a dog "looks good" on the outside doesn't necessarily mean he's healthy and thriving on the inside. it's sometimes a good sign, but if there are poor ingredients, there are poor ingredients. Just a thought.

True, but if he both looks great and acts great, and is a Great Pyrnees at 14 or a Rottie past 12, chances are good he IS doing great.

My GSDs get the expensive foods (yeah, I seem to have fallen for it).  Meanwhile, my beagles (Champion show dogs in their day) did it all on Pedigree.  I've got one now who is 17 and she still can jump on the couch (can't make it up to the bed anymore) and will still open the kitchen cabinets and tip over the trash can if I forget to put it up on the counter before I leave the house.  She had Purina Puppy Chow her first year and Pedigree for (count 'em) 16 years beyond that.  So while dogs are different with different needs, a lot of them don't just exist, but THRIVE on different brands.

I feed my 8 yr old the limited ingredient RC diet (venison/potato) and the change in him is evident.  I HATE the cost, however...the 35 lb bag I bought at the vet's was $97!  I've heard others suggest Natural Balance limited ingredient....has anyone had any success/problems with that?

$97 a bag? I think you would be able to find something cheaper than that, couldn't you find that at a feed store or online cheaper? Seems awful expensive.

I've found a couple sites that sell the food cheaper, but with shipping, etc. the cost seems to be about the same.  I haven't gone to any feed stores - don't really know if there are any around where I live - but that's a good idea.  I'll look into it..  The Natural Balance is about half the price but I'm still comparing ingredient labels and want to get the OK from my vet before we switch.

For anyone interested in Orijen , I just got the info from this online site has once again offered to sell it on any orders over $40.00 with free shipping. Their Orijen Adult 29.7lb bag is $57.99 includes shipping! Cheapest I have found anywhere online yet! When you register then go to check out type FREE in the coupon code and voile' "free shipping"! If you order and don't mind, tell him Trailrider sent you, he said he would give me a free gift.... but it doesn't matter to me one way or another, I like the food. I am going to paste this into the other thread on Orijen also so forgive me if you read it twice.... www.doggiezbest.com
