oh one more note, some dogs are "monkey see monkey do". If you garden in front of the dog and dig around in front of him, many dogs will join in the fun. Best to cover holes NOT in front of the dog but with him away where he can't watch.
I once was at a friends house sitting out in the garden. My friend was pruning her rose bushes and her black lab was sitting there watching her. After about 5 minutes the dog stood up, walked over to the rose bushes, plucked one of the buds off, and carried it over to her!! Monkey see monkey do!
