What about having the vet check for their heart, eye's, lungs, etc? That is what I take my pups in for, of course after their first set of shot's.

I do not take to the vets until they are at least 3 months old unless they have an health issue. . Now if i buy a pup I take sooner but try to limit the exposure.

I would like to add that good experienced breeders hardly do make profit. And with all that experience they should be competant to vaccinate there own puppies and dogs - the bottomline is to keep cost low.

It is illegal to vaccinate your own puppies in the UK

I have a pediactric cardiology stethoscope and some training in that department so I can listen to hearts and lungs myself. Most of my pups are shipped out, so they get a complete health check when I take them in for their health certificates or at the time of rabies vaccinations.  Buyers are welcome to take their pups in for health checks, but for myself, its not worth the risk of exposure to infectious disease, let alone the expense, to take an apparently healthy puppy to a vet office. I had a bad experience doing that years ago, brough parvo home to my house, eneded up with a huge bill to save a litter and a LOT of work sterilizing the place to eliminate contamination as much as possible. I swore then, as I fried my landscaping with an agricultural burner and sterilized the galvanizing off my kennel panels with a hot pressure washer infused with bleach, never to repeat that mistake. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I do the puppy vacinations, wormings etc.  Health check for health certificate at eight weeks at the vet which includes an all round exam , heart , ears, eyes, lungs, tenderness in hips, bite, testicle check on the males.   I want to know if there is any kind of problem before a pup leaves here.   Rabies done at the vet at the appropriate age.

I agree with neohaus; having puppies purchased by other people seen by your licensed veterinarian provides some degree of protection for yourself if problems do occur. Yes, I also expect clients to take their puppies to a vet of their choice within 2 days of pick-up (providing its not on a week-end) for both their protection and mine. If something goes wrong with the vaccination, then you've got some degree of 'protection' yourself because you did the textbook-correct thing in taking the pups to your vet and had it done; they're supposed to know how to properly store and handle vaccinations. If a problem is found with the vaccination, the vet should help you. There is no 'support' if something goes wrong with self-vaccinated pups.

But if a dog is mine and isn't going to be doing anything where official vet-proof of vaccinations is needed (TDI paperwork requires rabies vaccination to be done by a vet, but not the combo-vaccination), yes, I can and do self-vaccinate.

I just took a litter of 4 pups in for their health check, 1st vaccinations, 3rd worming, AND had my 19 mos old male given his general health check, combo vaccination, his 3yr rabies vaccination, blood heartworm test(negative), fecal flotation(negative also), and 3 interceptor pills for dog 51-100lbs: final cost: $113.10. I don't complain to pay such reasonable pricing to my vet, and they're nice and GOOD, too, which I appreciate. No breeder discount or anything, but my vet hasn't taken on new clients for a while. I'm glad I got established with them.
