DEFINITELY get on that yahoo group!

Through that group I found a surgeon and my dog had rectal pull through surgery at age 7 - radical but for him that did it and his fistulas - some were 7-8 inches long and into his leg muscle!!! This particular vet felt that you had to dissect them all out.  He went until his death at 11 of hemangiosarcoma with no further problems.

But there are many many many different approaches that seem to keep it at bay for different people!

My beautiful bitch NZ. Ch. Von Hefner Izazaza is now 6.5yrs and has had PF since she was 2yrs old.
I maintain her health by keeping her very well exercised as she is still being shown and a very strict diet.
She only gets Eukanuba FP veterinary diet dry food (FP is fish & potato) which is only available here in New Zealand from your Vet and I also give her fish oil and  surimi fishfood which we buy for making seafood salads etc. As a change I will give her sardines and she loves cooked potatoes and veges.  She is not allowed red meat or bones.
She is on medication every 2nd day of half Azamun tablet (try Google to read about this drug) and 10mg (half tablet) of Prednisone.
She has no horrible lesions now or discharge around her rear and never seems to suffer from irritation and has been this way now for sometime. Iza leads a full life and is happy and well but I am very strict with her diet and this seems to have worked for her.
Maybe this might not work for every sufferer but hopefully will continue to help my girl.

I have a new "rescue" who is a show-line female, sent to germany to be titled - titled Schh1,Kkl-1,V-rated, VERY nice female - brought back with plans to breed her (not me, the person who owned her) and PF discovered.  She will be 4 years old soon.  Breeder/owner spayed her and asked me to help find her a home.  She was on a course of antibiotics (not pred, would have to look at the bottle to find out what it was) which is now finished, and she has to get ointment on her anus area every day - once per day and sometimes I do it twice/day.  The PF are fine and controlled and maybe she won't have to go back on antibiotics at all, ointment continues for her lifetime - or maybe not - but it is not a problem at the moment and vet said it wouldn't be, just check daily and ointment.

(so ps this is a very nice dog with a lot of training/time put into her with minor and easy-to-maintain health problem looking for a great home)
