My vet is also a breeder,

You  must be talking about stupid people, they come in all colors, shapes and sizes, and you can't fix them....

You may hate them, but you take their money, hmmmm....

Welcome to the board " BasicVet"

I hate traffic.  :)

I have a great vet who has helped me out on numerous occassions and who I get on with very well, we don't always agree on things but in general he is brilliant.

However, I hear to many complaints regarding some vets from people who have had puppies from us things like

* "Your puppy has Hip Dysplasia" - this was a 10 week old puppy going for its second jab jab and i assume the vet had x-ray vision as he made this diagnosis without taking x-rays.

* "You must neuter your puppy asap, when can we book you in?" - again a 10 week old puppy going for its second jab

* Again 10 week old puppy going for its second jab - The vet said the puppy needed to start the full course again because he/she had not adminsisted the first vaccine (although the owner had the stamped card)

* "Your dogs overweight and must go on this food" - which cost around £50 for 12kgs (how much does the vet earn from this???)

* Dog with a skin problem - Hundereds of pounds worth of blood tests and skin scrapings (Eventually changed the dogs diet and the problem cleared up)

These are just a few of the many things I have come across, like breeders there are some very good vets out there however, just like breeders there are planty of crooks too!!!

Months ago, when Sita was acting like she was bloating, I took her, in the middle of the night, to an emergency vet. While we were there, a "breeder" came in with 3 blue pit puppies, that were VERY sick. The puppies, about 3.5 months old, were skin and bones and were trembling, and basically non-responsive. The breeders had not given them any vaccinations.

They had been sick for over a week, I listened while, they told the vet that they had given the puppies all types of medicines including injecting them sub q with fluids, and asprin. They had given the puppies all manor of antibiotics sometimes 2 or 3 different types in the same day, not sticking with one or another. Acting like "dopers" (using terms like "wow man", dude, far out) and as if they knew what they were doing. I was amazed by how unemotional they seemed to be, they seemed more interested in how much it would cost then actually saving the puppies.

I don't know if this is a "regular" occurrence for all night emergency vet hospitals, but if it is, I would hate breeders too. Two of them died before Sita was released, they were just too far gone. I have to wonder if its the same vet?

Moons-
Dr. Larry White, Briarcrest Vet Clinic - Houston is just the vet you describe. Wonderful man and true lover of animals, completely competent with small animals and the go to guy for reptiles. Respected by clients and fellow vets a alike. He's been my friend and vet since '83.

My favorite vet, is actually a breeder, so your post is biased because they are breeders out there that can perform all these thing that you claim they can't, because they happen to be vets as well dumb ass. The stupid vets that most of us refer to are the ones that are in it for money, and never spend any time to educate them self. How do you explain such a high number of vets that recommend garbage like science diet to their clients pets? and there are just handful that recommends raw feeding?

My favorite vet was out one day and my parents Dachshund was in pain (back pain very common for the breed). Guess what that stupid ass wanted to perform a surgery on him. When I asked if there are any other options he said no. He did not change his mind till I said no and start walking out through the door. Than he recommended a shot that would help with the pain and help relax the mussels. After that I put my parents dog on a strict diet, he is healthy and happy since than. If I would be so stupid like most pet owners I would put the dog through surgery and in even more pain and discomfort. So yeah there are a lot of dumb ass good for nothing vets, and these are the ones people talk trash about.

The good ones come far in between, and they are usually the ones that not just breeders but people like me "hobbyist" have lots of respect for and always go for advise.

BTW my favorite vet is against raw feeding, but we agree do disagree on this subject, and one thing he always say every time he sees my dog is: "I can't deny your dog looks fantastic".

What a joke. "Basicvet", you can say you don't care and you won't read replies, but we all know that isn't true, since you cared enough to make a vitrious and lengthy thread about a very OLD topic. You won't be able to resist viewing, even if your pride keeps you from responding.

First of all, you're an emergency vet? Good for you. I avoid them at all costs. They charge 3-5 times what a normal vet will cost, charge you $100+ just to walk in the damn door, and I personally have had one tell me my dog was going to die and completely change their mind ten minutes later. I have a slew of other horror stories from the same emergency clinic I was forced to go to.

The topic you are so buttsore about was a vent post for people to share their bad experiences with vets. Many posters here are not even breeders, just GSD owners.

Are you saying that EVERY vet is an angel? Always gets it right? No such thing as a vet who is lazy, a scammer, an idiot, or less than knowledgeable about EVRYTHING dog related? Well hell, sign me up for vet school, I always wanted to know what it's like to be perfect.

I had a client who took their dog in for a neuter and they only removed one testicle. ONE. Apparently you can get a degree without being able to count to two.  I recommended him to my (excellent, experienced, and trustworthy) vet. I had a client have their vet tell their dog got an upper respiratory infection from a training collar. That's like saying I can get the flu from wearing a choker necklace.  I have to deal all the time with my clients being given training advice from their vets who somehow think they are dog trainers. But according to you, vets are infallible.

So Basicvet, since you detest breeders so much, I guess every single animal you own or have ever owned has been a mixed breed dog from the shelter, right? You would NEVER own a purebred dog that came from (gasp!) a breeder, right? Yes, we're all a bunch of crackheads who breed pit bulls. Doubt you're a DVM with that grammar. Ten bucks says you are NOT a vet, probably a twentysomething vet tech with your panties in a twist. Most experienced veterinarians I know don't have the time or inclination to pipe up on random webboards where people complain about their vet.

Have a great day, sweetie.

VonWal , I use to hate traffic and would be very frustrated when having to drive in it.  I now say wow, look at all of those people working, all is ok for now, I now find it comforting and will sit back and relax and listen to my CD'S.

by VonWal on 25 November 2009 - 16:11

Heh - very philosophical of you, 1doggie2....but I still hate traffic regardless of whether it's people going to/coming from work, or just moronic rubber-neckers checking out accident remnants on the other side of the highway in the far shoulder :)

What my experience is that we HAVE to be on our toes as breeders.

I have been banned by one vet in town, because I didnt' take their recommendation, yet I was correct in retrospect.

Then, indeed the misdiagnosis I  have seen vets perform, is astounding.  More than 2x I can recall, that a vet stated SEVERE HIP DISPLASIA and each and every time I prooved them wrong.   Where the hell did they go to school!!!

I now have found a mobile vet who is also a breeder (of Goldens), and she understands that I breed for the betterment of the breed.
( PS:  Please tell your vets about the Degenerative Myelopathy  test available as most don't know that either! )
She came out at 9pm Friday night AFTER she taught class an hour away.  The other vet in town I go to for the Xrays bloodwork stuff as they now know "how I expect" it to be done.  Mind you, this took SEVEN years for me to run into this mobile vet on the parking lot of Sams club...!!!   She is old school though, but I know she explains her diagnosis to me (being the teacher in her) so that I dont feel im getting the 3rd degree and don't have to ask all the questions I normally would.  And I get her full attention when she is here just with me, not running from room to room, cramming patients in and out to BILL BILL BILL us...

I am convinced I lost two GREAT dogs because of vets screw ups.  Thus it is BEWARE TO all breeders not to blindly accept what they tell you, to get on the net and shop for information like crazy, and find a vet who does NOT discrimate like the loony tune above mentioned (BasicVet name says it all doesn't it).

Wow, He / She has a lot to learn as I would never bring one of my dogs to a emergency vet in the first place cause the ones out by me are about paymet first and then maybe they will save your pet. I feel that most breeders have the knowledge do to good vets showing them how.

I co-owned a dog with another breeder friend and he came down with bloat, now before this emergency vet would even look at the dog she had to cough up 1,500.00. He then looked at our boy and said he would perform surgery to save him. This was at 10:30 pm. It wasn't til 12:45am before our boy went into surgery.

Well to make a long story short Bruno died on the table. Was it a case of bloat that killed him or was it the lack of getting him in to surgery right away?

And for that reason I never rely on emergency vets as I feel that they prey on the oh mighty dollar and forget about their pledge they took when thern became a vet, and if they loose an animal they they shrug it off to things out of their control, PAYMENT FIRST
