Ive never had a pup that stopped to think.....at 8 weeks old  so I woulnt know what to do with one of those , so I would be inclined to lean immediately to the explorer......

From my expeirience,  The explorer will be a bit more independant and less reluctant to hesitate at something new, not have as much inate self preservation, and a little tougher to get his/her attention at times, likely a little higher drive on the field too.

Not that hesitation or "thinking it over" is a bad thing,  those dogs tend to be more thought process oriented, easier to teach, and less apt to injur themselves.  Self preservation can be a good thing too, in certain circumstances.

Glad to hear the breeder has lots of experience,  If your comfortable with her reccomendations go with it and enjoy your new addition if that's what is to be the case.

Sorry I neglected to answer the 2nd part of your question...

For me,  The explorer would be a dog I would try to go all the way in SchH with,  thinking all the while that Obedience would be the biggest challenge with this particular dog.  Tracking could be made easier for this "type"  so long as you kept it challenging, upbeat, and super fun at the end. (like a decoy with a sleeve)

The Thinker would I would expect to excell in Tracking and in OB but might be challenging to get this one to excell and enjoy Bitework.  (with enthusiasm and little inhabition)

Explorer... PP Prospect, possible K-9/detection (if you could keep it interesting enough)

Thinker... SAR, Detection, Seeing Eye,  (something that challenges the brain)

Hope that answers it,  Hope I don't get rheemed for it as it is just my thinking and my 2 cents for whatever it is worth,  Certainly nothing in GSD's or any other breed for that matter is gospel, and asking opinions should not be discouraged...  :-)

Let's be careful about the gsd being a "thinker" some of you are almost applying human traits to the dog. the reason the one pup hangs back is due to several factors including the level of confidence, drives and curosity. Maybe a actual small level of thinking but not a major factor. The pup that goes exploring also "thinks" to a small degree but is more secure and confident hence he heads out.
