I have often been told that breeding black to black, and more often after one or two generations of doing so can result in blues and livers, and therefore black to black breeding should be avoided. Thoughts on this?

And also, let's talk bi-color....seems there is no sure way to indentify a bi-clor pup from a melanistic black and tan, other than "time".  Thsi is driving me bonkers. Besides loving solid blacks, my favorite color overall is a rich bi-color. I have seen pups born so dark and appearing like clearly bi-colors, turn out lighter than other pups who were born with more tan...I have tons of pictures of bi-colors at various ages, and also melanistic black and tans..and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it??

Kandi: I ve read somethen like that before about what you first said. So that may be correct.

And a quick question.

More than likely what color would most likely be produced by a Melanistic Black & tan male and a Black Sable female??

by Kandi on 23 August 2007 - 16:08

A black sable and a melanistic black and tan...I would expect to produce solid blacks, melanistic black and tans, or dark or black sables.

oh...or possibly a bi-color....

And since now I know how to post pictures...here is my black sable:

iluvmygsd,

I think right now you pup is too young to know for sure, IMO. Those sables change so much for the first year. I would hesitate to refer to him as a black sable, as usually the "muddies" run down their front legs and blend in with the toe marks. He definitely does have nice rich pigment though...very handsome!!!
