Just an update. Her desire for food has diminished significantly. I noticed she nibbled mostly at night when everyone is asleep or when there's no one here but me. I allow her that and don't try to force it, but I've also been giving her whatever she'll eat, raw chicken, hamburger, rice etc but even with that she will only eat what appears to be a very small amount then normal for her. Vet says it's normal, the pups are getting bigger and pushing her stomach. I was also able to feel kicks!! From what I can tell there's at least five (I felt kicks in three different places on the right side and two on the left).

She vomited yesterday (what seemed like a waterfall to me) but she had just got done running down the hall and tried to scarf down all her water. She still has the spotting (still only with urination) but my vet is still not concerned, she said since she's a first timer her uterus has never been used so it has to do a lot of stretching and pushing on other organs. She wants to wait out any further testing and antibiotics (if it's a uti) because she's so close to her day, she said the strength of antibiotics could make her ill and she doesn't want to risk what it could do to the pups. From what she explained, if it's a uti it's a minor one which she believes will clear up after birth. If not, then the course of antibiotics.

I can say, feeling the kicks has eased my mind about this pregnancy. But the flood gates for whelping is about to break!

You men and women have been amazing! By the way, she is not a cottage cheese or hard boiled egg fan lol I have to scramble the eggs. Only her!

I think you need a better vet, or at least a second opinion. I have a female here who still has two weeks til her due date. She is huge with pups and has been showing since week three. Her appetite is ravenous, I've been feeding her twice a day(usually i only feed her once aday) since her fifth week.
I've not ever had a female bleed duing pregnancy, not first time or during subsequent preg.
Her appetite being off during the last weeks when the pups are growing and she needs to keep up herweight and strength would be a concern to me.
I imagine many vets have not had any experience with pregnant bitches, since spay is the way.
It would be good for you and your dog to see a vet with experience.

I agree with Joan. When my friend's dog was having difficulty whelping her first litter, the emergency vet clinic was totally useless! We were told we could bring the dog in, but they were very busy, and we would have a VERY long wait before the vet could see us!  Roll eyes

We decided to give that a miss, and instead called the female's breeder for advice, even though it was past midnight!

Is the blood red or brown?

And to repeat a question I asked earlier, what is her approximate height (at the withers) and weight? Just curious to know, because it would help guessing what her parentage is!

I have to agree, I wasn't too comfortable with leaving a uti but she seemed to be experienced in pregnant dogs, at least I thought. Everyone else in the office suggested we change over to her (we were seeing another vet in the same office but they said she was best with pregnant dogs/cats) once she got pregnant so we did. I'm thinking she prefers to do things different and that's great, if it all works out in the positive, but I don't my baby to be one of the negatives.

The blood was bright red but has gone more towards a dark red. Almost Brown. She's still herself, except for eating. Now we have loose still, not diarrhea because it's formed its just soft. Her stomach is also making weird sounds like her stomach is growing but it's not at her stomach area and she keeps almost attacking her butt. She licks herself (vulva) and bites her legs almost like it's a bad case of O.C.D.

One pup I felt was right below her hind hips. I thought too far down for this early. I'm going to get a second opinion on everything. If this is a normal pregnancy for her, there's not another one like it that I could find online.

Also, I noticed a worm in her stool. Isn't that fantastic!? We're not able to worm her while she's pregnant because the last time she was wormed she had a weird reaction to it, it worked but it took a few days to get her back to normal. Vet said we would just have to aggressively worm the whole bunch after the birth.

All I can say is what the what?

For measurement: head to foot: 28 inches
Butt to foot: 23 inches
Noise to tail: 49 inches
Head measurements: nose to back of head : 10 inches
Ear to ear: 7 inches
Snout length: 4 inches

Weight: approximately 96 pounds, prior to pregnancy 78 pds

She is going crazy right now. No nesting but she's panting and won't stop trying to scratch everything (with her teeth) she's scratching her tennis ball, the tape measure...what's going on?

If that was my bitch, i would take her ASAP to a reproduction vet or if you know of a breeder vet. But I would steer clear of the current one. There are safe wormers for preg bitches. What diid the vet use that made the dog ill?
Sounds to me like your dog is in labor. All the biting of her hind legs is likely due to pain. I will reemphasize, don't take her to the current vet. I would never sacrafice the well being of any bitch i've ever owned for the sake of a litter of pups...I'm sure you wouldn't either. Your current vet sounds useless.

I bet your bitch got bred prior to the breeding you witnessed and now she is in labor, due date is earlier than from the breeding you witnessed. Can youtake her temp?

by FirstAndOnly on 12 May 2014 - 15:05

We have panting....I think she's just to hot...ugh

by joanro on 12 May 2014 - 15:05

Can yousee bulging in the area between the anus and vulva?

by joanro on 12 May 2014 - 15:05

Panting...is she in your house? Are you hot?

My friend's bitch got an infection in her uterus, and began to pass dark brown blood. She aborted several dead pups, and eventually had to be spayed to save her life.

There is a possibility that she is either in labour, or aborting the litter. I'd get her to a competent vet, NOW!
