(watcher) Your opinion about 99% out of 100, is your fairy story , not everyone else's, we know unsound dogs do win, but not to the level you state.    (Singe)   I dont know who the offending show people are! Please tell! Dont blame the K.C. for the judges, thats down to the show committees. Resposible Breeders dont set out to produce "Cripples".        (Bancroft) I agree with your opinion on the K.C. chairman, but your opinion on show dogs is wrong, you say, the alternative to buying a semi crippled showdog, you give the impression that all show dogs are like that! and all the working bred dogs are utopia. For every successful working dog, how many dont make it, litter mates! are you saying, they dont have problems, you are obviously pro working and anti show. You say show people ignore basic temprement, workability, and they are resposible for the decline in the breed, and  they crave short muzzled, oversized, cow hocked, over angulated, fearful, nervous, shallow biting, unworkable animals. I dont believe any serious breeder aims for that!. Remember a good show dog is a good representative of that breed.          (Helengbroed) Johan, I dont think your post has offended people, like you said, you have never had or will have a shepherd, so many people wont take you too seriously, because your opinion is not based on experiance of the shepherd. 99% OF THE SHOW DOGS SHOULD BE PUT DOWN!! is that the intelligent opinion based on your experiance of the shepherd. You say, we should go back to the origional dog and restart, based on your opinion,,  we would end up with Malinois!! Your offer to discuss with an experianced breeder and conformation judge, about the pro's and con's of the shepherd, and he would'nt know where to hide is a very bold statement considering you have never had a shepherd. From where I come from, they would say, Your talking through mouth again!!!

Tigermouse, most breeders are not looking for "pretty" dogs as you put it.  Most try to breed dogs of correct construction and temperament.

You were very quick to call the Crufts judge a fool, this man has bred both show and working trials champions, I don't think fool is the adjective that best describes him and he's certainly not ignorant.  He's a well respected breeder and judge.

Tigermouse, I think selective editing is the real problem here, perhaps you're disagreeing with what you think he said?  Nevertheless, it's hasty (at best) to call someone you have no knowledge of, ignorant and a fool.

Oh Bancroft, anyone would think you and only you had owned/bred the best in all the world.  I'm sure your dogs are as precious to you as mine are to me.  (I'm happy for mine to be judged - show or work) There is not a shred of doubt in my mind that my dogs would save me from an assailant or die trying... such is the nature of the beast but I'm not blind to their faults.  That appears to be the REAL difference here.  Most (not all) Breed people accept that there are faults in their dogs and try to improve upon them, you appear to lack the knowledge and humilty required for this but have sufficient temerity to point out what you believe to be everyone elses shortcomings!  This is not constructive Bancroft. we could be offering each other ways to improve?

very true missbeeb, perhaps i was hasty but i didn't call him ignorant i was talking about his comments.

if it was clever editing then perhaps what he was saying could be misinterpreted but i doubt we will ever know what it was he said.

i will not edit my post but perhaps i should have put a "foolish thing to say" instead.

Oh dear

My friend has given a home to four retired gs police dogs over the years. All were of german showline breeding.  Shock horror!!!!!!

My oldie - he went in the ring and did reasonably well considering we didnt do the training and chase around after shows.  His brother was a fab police dog and their father had been a working dog who loved man work.

IMHO the show lines regularly go over to working but it doesnt seem to happen the other way.  My oldie may not have been used for man work but he did train for it, and he was a fantastic Pets As Therapy dog too.
