@ hundmutter:

Poor Latin?? How is "divide at impera"  poor Latin?  Is this better? dīvide et īmpera.

And  No Greeks did not speak Latin but they made the   maxim famous  Mainly Julius Caesar . Tradition attributes the origin of the motto to Philip of Macodonia  who said    διαίρει καὶ βασίλευε ( Divide and rule/conquer) . And Philip Of Macedonia was Greek:)  Happy now? Get a life!

The rest of your post does not deserve comment,.

Prager said, " I absolutely agree. But it is what it is. When I was coming to US I was taken aback by preoccupation with race > Of course it is what is it is. It is based on old Greek concept divide et impera = divide and rule and later it was masterfully utilized by the Roman ruler Caesar and the French emperor Napoleon and it is going on until today. Hitler needed unite the nation behind the cause so he fanatized Germans into hating Jews,. Marxists, Slavs,... in name of lebensraum = living space for Germans. Marxists like Lenin have done the same thing by dividing nation among czar and proletariat and rich and poor, bolschevicks vs menschevicks , white (socialists) vs red..... Today politicians are dividing nation on men vs women, poor vs rich, black vs whites , Liberal vs conservatives, gun owners vs gun controllers ,...,.and on and on and on. That is how politician gain and maintain their power ."

You didn't come from a country where the justification for enslaving a race of people was the fact that they were a different race. Politicians are not dividing blacks and whites as much as they are taking advantage of the divide that has existed for hundreds of years. The difference between dems and reps is that democrats talk TO black Americans while republicans talk ABOUT them. Do you think blacks have forgotten that Trump was (is?) a birther?

Look at this election: which candidate is the more divisive one? Who is pointing a finger at the Other? It is Trump. He has managed to get less educated white men to blame Mexicans and Muslims and minorities in general for their problems. The very people who are weakest are given this imaginary power to influence their lives and the course of America's destiny. While they are all drooling over a wall that will never happen Trump will be cutting taxes for the wealthiest Americans. Who exactly was Hitler speaking to when he spoke of lebensraum? Who made up the volkisch movement? It was the same type of person that Trump appeals to most: working class men from the majority population.

That was not the point of my post. Point of my post is that, short of rare exceptions,  NO  politicians are not here for us.  They are here for themselves. They strive on division(s) among people. Which they achieve by fanning internal strife utilizing real or fake crises to do so.   If all world would held their hands and sing Kubaya  then politicians would be out of business. That is not what they want.   And people - shills like you for example  - pointing finger one way or another calling opposing parties names, and comparing theirs actions  to Hitler's  and other such nonsense  are just doing the job the usefully idiots are required and expected to do and have always done  for thousands of years.    Obama - I have to give it to him - has been  amazingly good at dividing black and whites and poor and rich.  He is a master.

Oh, THAT famous Greek ! Well, that's all right then ...

And:  I can well believe you didn't want to comment on my last remark, about you and your attitude to Muslims.  Qu'el surprise !

Si fecisti, nega.

I am not sure about the USA, but personally I believe in many politicians.

Most politicians became politicians because they believe in something ( I don´t need to like their belief, but that´s their major motivation ) - they want to change, or at least, better a status quo.

After a while all of them have to realize that industry and international money transfer is more influental than politics - at that point a lot of politicians quit, others try to "find a way", and that way most often is a way of concessions.

To be a politician for sure is no easy job, a lot of selfless local politicians give up after a while, the remaining rest learns how to "play" - I want X, therefor I´ll give you Y, and both of us will fight against Z...

Meanwhile they have to keep happy the majority, otherwise they will be out after the next election.

That´s no fun

Hundmutter. I guess this is above your ability to comprehend.
I'll try again.
The maxim divide and rule /conquer was first said by Philip Of Macedonia - Greek king and he said it in Greek language.
Later on Julius Caesar made it famous and of course he use Latin = divide et impera .
And later on yet Napoleon used such strategy and he was in France.
I hope this help. :)

It isn't easy being any shade of politician, Susie, you are right. Some of them would get to keep our trust and our sympathy for the hard work, however, if they did not do stupid and self-seeking things: e.g. certain men who have positions of responsibility who then get led by their dicks. I am sure you can think of a few, I know I can. And this may not be exclusively a male 'thing' but the majority of politicians who get caught e.g. employing prostitutes, dressing up in prostitutes clothing, fiddling their expenses, need I go on ? are not the women ministers.

Hans, why not just SAY: "Devide and rule"; which is a phrase more people than not will recognise ? Why the diversion into Wikipedia ? Just making yourself look clever ? FAIL.

Also what is funny is that you think that the "divide et impera" is in Italian of course divide et impera is the same both in Italian and in Latin. However Gaius Julius Caesar was in Rome and not Italy thus he spoke Latin . That should be your first clue. ;) You just need to learn how to use Google translate better.
