Does anyone train at a club where chicks do helper work?

My club only has one guy doing helper work, and all the regulars are chicks, which means we’ve got one very tired helper.  So, I want to step up and start doing some helper work.  Problem is, I’m a chick and I only have a fraction of the upper body strength of the typical helper guy.  Oh, did I mention “Samson” the 95 lb GSD who is civil and loves to bully the helper?  And don’t even get me started about Rocky the Rottweiler.  Oy!

I would like to get in contact with another “Schutzhund Babe” who is an experienced helper.  There’s got to be a way to compensate for the smaller muscle mass.  Yes, I’ve already donned the sleeve and taken bites, but I want to learn proper technique.  I know I’ll never be a helper at the Nationals, but I want to learn quality helper work, so that I can help our club, and help our dogs develop their skills.  Quality work, not just messing around.

I can’t imagine that I would be taken seriously if I went to a helper seminar.  All those big burly guys?  With years of serious bitework under their belts?  I think I might get laughed off the field.

If you want to get hold of me privately, you can fire off an email…

Thanks!

Stop using words like ''chick'' and ''babe''. It makes you sound stupid.

But yes, there are women who do helper work. If it is what you want to do, just go for it. Have some faith in yourself. Everyone had to start somewhere!

Autobahn,  sorry dude it's the way I talk.  Besides, I love it when people underestimate my intelligence.  It makes them easy targets.

Sheesh, do you have contact info for Kathy?  Email?  Phone number?  I would love to get hold of her to talk.

schhbabe--

nobody is born on  this earth knowing everything.  we all learn and we are all on different levels at different times.  you don't start out doing helper work for mature 95 lb males.  that comes later......or at least it should.  you can, however, give your club helper a much needed break in between dogs by learning to do some prey work with pups and young dogs.  your club helper can oversee the entire session, but catch his breath and cool off a bit by teaching others how to work in prey.  defense is something that needs to be done by those with more experience, but a lot can be done in prey and by those who are willing to learn.  there is a great deal to learn about doing helper work.  some folks are just naturally better at it than others, but under the tuteldge of your club helper, you could start out  with pups and eventually work your way up to larger and more experienced dogs.  its not going to happen in just a few weeks, so be patient and listen to what he tells you.  good luck.

If you're serious, you should start building your upper body regularly, you'll need to strenghten it up. I was interested in agitation work myself for a while, but called it quits after an extremely serious American Bulldog totally jacked my body. I was incredibly sore from my shoulder to my knee for well over a week. It was hella fun, but I also have pinched nerves in my back, and if I want to continue training dogs at all, I really cannot abuse myself that way. Good luck to you and have fun!

pjp, good post.  Believe me, it is quite comical to see me getting dragged around by the "big dogs".  I definately want to start with the young 'uns.

KC, Yup I can see a Bowflex in my near future....
