Living in Florida we must always give Frontline Plus and of course Heargard Plus. These are a must but with 7 dogs I wonder if I may cut down on the cost?

I am in Georgia and I use Frontline (w/o the Plus)...if you kill the fleas, why do you need the IGR?? If the fleas are dead, they can't lay eggs.... I also preferred Interceptor to Heartgard because of the extra protection against whips, which they guarantee or used to?? Check out www.entirelypets.com - they have excellent prices for Frontline and so does biovets.com..... They often run no shipping charges specials and 5% off specials.. I switched to Ivomec when it no longer was possible to buy heartworm preventative over the counter from Australia.... getting the Rx from my vet is not a problem but it is still very pricey. Your vet can figure out the oral dosage for Ivomec and a slightly larger dose every 3 months or so will work against whipworms... this is what my vet uses and has used since she was in vet school when she couldn't afford heartworm preventative products. Or get an Rx and order the product - you will still save! I love finding these sites with the good prices!!

I also recommend ivomec strongly, It very good but it doesnot work in case of ticks. Some people dont believe in use of ivomec but my own experince with this medicine is excellent. Front line should be used in extreme conditions and it depends how you apply it. Usually people apply it when the dogs are wet but the right way is that no bathing two day before and after frontline and the results are better and it stays effective for a longer period.

I use Ivomec too.Have used it fo 12 years. It cost about 45 dollars for a 50ml bottle. I start them out on it at 5 months old,at about 1/3 ml. The large dogs get up to 1 ml,all depends with the size dog.So you can tell with the size bottle and the dosage this stuff will go a long way. And after all it is same active ingredient thats in that fiber pill that you pay out your butt for.An honest vet. will tell you that. This will prevent heartworm and other perisites including external ones. "no fleas or ticks or heartworms here"

Frontline is safe for normal application, it's effective against ticks for a month and fleas for up to 3 months. We can often get 2 months out of it but it is safe for monthly application as well.. Fronline or any other topical should never be applied when the animal is wet or at least 2 days before or after shampooing.... it uses the natural oils in the coat to translocate... I have seen Frontline be totally ineffective when applied incorrectly..... Ivomec is not used in the prevention of fleas or ticks, it has been known to be effective in cases of demodectic mange....

How do you all administer Ivomec? Orally or injection?

I've been using injectible 1% Ivomec for 17 years. Anything I own that is 5 months or older gets exactly the same dose as an adult. You don't need to give anymore than 1/2 ml/cc to protect a dog from heartworm. That's the largest dose ever needed to be administered monthly. I use a 3cc syringe (smallest I can find) and fill it to 1/2cc squirt it onto the food and give it to the dog. Any picky dogs get it in some canned food just enough to mix the Ivomec in it and feed it to them. People. There are products that you can use in place of Frontline or Advantage. It takes care of ticks and fleas very effectively. The product I use is SPOTTON for cattle apply it just like other flea products not to exceed 3cc's a dog. Apply it at the tail, middle of back and at shoulder blades. It is good for 35 days. I spend $20.00 for a 50ml bottle of Ivomec and $30.00 for the SPOTTON for cattle, this lasts me about 2 years depending on the amount of dogs I have at the time. There is a good site for those who are interested in alternative to high Vet bills. The site is owned by a Beagle owner. Go to his site and look under Beagle Health. A WEALTH of information! Here is that website http://beaglesunlimited.net/ Birdy... Note: Don't confuse this Spotton with the kind that is available for dogs in the little vials. This is cattle stuff. Best administered with a syringe and a bird feeding syringe is best as it comes to a point so you can get it directly to the skin. YOU MUST WEAR GLOVES when applying SPOTTON.

Can you give Spotton to pregnant females and pups?

by DKiah on 19 September 2004 - 01:09

I would only use a product on pregnant femals and puppies that specifically states it is safe to use on them!
