Shelley Strohl

A wise old German once told me that in the early days of the formation of the GSD, there WERE in fact, brindles.  He pulled out an old, OLD book, and showed me a picture or two of those brindle GSD's, along with the one of Harand Grafath and the rest we have all seen.  With all the predudice (sp?) against sables and gray dogs in the top rings, can you even imagine trying to bring back the brindles? Bet your money. Some enterprising entrepeneur will dountless try one day during our lifetimes, as are the people breeding blues, Shiloh shepherds, white shepherds, etc, intent on making their first million with "rare and beautiful brindle shepherds..."

How's that for throwing a monkey wrench into this discussion.

Ever notice how some dark sables kind of look like brindles during a brief stage of the process of shedding their coats? Pallo used to remind me of an under-exposed zebra for a few weeks of the year. :-O

Bob,

Unfortunately, it has been done, is being done, AND THE WORST PART YET.....these offspring are being sold to unsuspecting people.  Meaning, the offspring are being sold as EITHER GSD or Mal., and not being told it's a cross.  :(

There may not have been a reason to think about crossing the GSD with a mal if the working show split had not  happened.  Im a novice but this seemed like it cut the breeding possibilities for both west german working and show.  On top of that the working lines seem to be more concerned with the "sport" and "points"  while the show side seems to be about "look".  Both sides may be headed in the same direction  as the American lines.....not the same type of dog but straying away from what the dog was 60 years ago.

AT the same time the west working/show split was happening it appears that the Czech republic was introducing DDR dogs trying to improve or to have a little bigger gene pool for working ability.  I dont think the DDR experienced a show working line split at that time.

If I wanted a working dog I would take a mal over an american or german show line any day.  It is getting close to that point with the west geman working lines.

I do think it is wrong to introduce a mal into a GSD breeding and pass it for GSD.

On the other side of the coin many of  the mal people wouldnt have a problem with introducing a GSD as long as it was bringing something desirable to the table.
