Rich countries' options
Congressional threats to sue OPEC will only make some American lawyers rich, not add supplies in order to push down prices. Removing gasoline taxes, as Hillary and McCain proposed, is simply another "subsidy" which will keep up demand by making gasoline cheaper to buy. Likewise, levying huge windfall-profits taxes on Exxon or other oil companies will merely aggravate the supply situation by reducing the cash they have with which to find and produce more oil.
This means the only sensible policies for the United States, Canada and other rich countries to adopt is for governments to impose, or reward, dramatic fuel efficiencies; to mandate hybrid vehicles; develop alternative energy sources and arrest urban sprawl as a means of enhancing urban density and the use of public transportation.

gas prices don't affect my dogs, or me personally. i am almost 29 and never got a driver's license, partially because i was in bad car accidents as a child and partially because i prefer biking. i bike everywhere i need to go, which is just in my city. a bike and bikecart can easily transport groceries as well as one dog while the other dog runs with the bike.

Wake up fluffy,

Everything you buy is gonna cost more.   Including bicycle tire's and dog biscuit's.   And pretty much everything else, period.

To their memory.

Shortstuff, I hope you are not part of that smiley faced problem or the rocking X problem, are you?

The price of oil effects all of us, fluffy, not just those who drive cars. If you got it a truck brought it - diesel costs roughly $1.00 per gallon more than regular gas. Who do you think it paying for that? Not Bush. Some people have to drive over 25 miles one way to get to work. You wouldn't be riding a bike if you had to do that, would you? Does it snow where you live? It does here.

I sort of resent the intimation that those of us who own "gas guzzlers" are carelessly escalating the problem. I don't own a Hummer, but I do own an RV that uses plenty of gas. So far this year and last we have really cut back on our trips and have leased a permanent site at a local campground where we let out RV sit for 7 months. It's easy and snobbish to say - get rid of those gas guzzlers, but I couldn't give away this RV and that's the problem others have with the big SUV's they were taught they needed to protect their families when they're on the road.  If you didn't have a big SUV to tote the kids to soccer practice you were a negligent parent. In addition, do you realize how many retirees in this country have worked and saved their entire lives so they could live a dream, buy an RV and go fulltime seeing the US? Last estimate I saw was several million fulltime RV's in the US. Now they are also paying the price, can't move that RV, end of that dream. What the hell they'll be dead in another 10 years anyway and old people get in the way of everything so it's not a big deal.

I believe if someone gave me total control for the last 15 years and a billion dollars to screw up this country the best that I could, I couldn't have done it any better than the morons we presently have in Washington D.C.

Look what is running for President, all three SUCK! Two empty suits and an empty pantsuit. All three are U.S. Senators with an approval rating in the 20s.

They ought to outsource Congress, it would have to be an improvement.

I totaly agree with the statements on this thread that allude to these problems being created on purpose.

If I posted what I thought needs to be done there would be black unmarked helicopters flying over my house and I would probably be arrested.

Amen

Everyone likes to blame others for the problem we have which is a typical human reaction. But the reality is most of us are to blame because we all keep re-electing the same members of congress over and over and they are the ones that created this mess. You can talk all you want about cutting the taxes or means of conservation. But the reality is that we are now in a world global market and as the rest of the world continues to grow the demand for oil will increase. All these measures are tiny efforts and right now at this moment we do not have an alternative fuel that will solve our problem. We will find one but still likley 20 to 30 years away.

So keep voting for the same idiots and le tthem keep laying the blame on big oil companies and on yourselves. Did any of you hear Obama mention that we all eat too much and drive too much?

Let's elect people who will create an actual energy policy and lets start drilling now!. We are closed to peaked out on the numbers of drilling rigs already so at best even if we all gear up today it will take several years to increase production of oil and natural gas to make us not dependent on imports.\\

For anyone missing my point it is this!  We are all responsible for this mess due to the fact we keep electing the same people and not holding the Dem and Rep parties responsible for their actions or in this case in-actions.

Agree, DesertRangers. Somehow we have lost our way in this country and have been convinced that we work for the government when the opposite should be true. Accountability is not practiced in our personal lives and we don't demand it from our elected officials either.
