Where is our showdog leading to, why do we require a bow arch as a topline on a showdog leading to steepest croups. where is the quando, uran, eiko, iso, fanto type gone? I seek forward and expect for opinions from all experts and the true gsd lovers.

Anand, not making fun of your request, it's just a touchy subject on this list. Hopefully you'll get some good response that will give you the answers you are looking for.

The arch started with Dr. Rommel in the late 60s. Before that Dr. Funk had straight back dogs. Hermann Martin kept it as did all the ensuing judges. It is their concept of perfection in the overline. The German standard states the topline must be straight. Go figure. This past show Orschler brought up Orbit to VA4. He is very much like his father Yasko. Arched in overline and moderate angles at each end. Once again this is their concept of perfection in those areas of the anatomy. Of course the working line dogs are straight in topline but very few approach the standard in overall anatomy.

it is true to say that not many working gsd meet the breed standard from a anatomical point of view , the same must be said for the show gsd from a temperament point of view !

Lenny, that's the best explanation I've read regarding toplines. Thanks.

Well vader, The working german shepherd Does meet the orignal breed standard. If different breed clubs would stop reinventing the standard to meet their own needs and likes we would no have the problem that we do.We have the American Kennel Club to thank for the banana backs mentioned above,All in all we have done a pretty good dog and all but ruined it.......in less then 50years.This is NOT a slam to all show dogs nor their handlers, just my opnion This arguement is not as old as the which came first the chicken or the egg but..........it can be just as intense How did I do Blitz?...lol.....

The AKC dogs have almost no arched backs. There problem with overline is some with a sway. Regarding the working line I would expect without really knowing, that any line of breeding that specializes in mental accuity and courage, would have superior mental and emotional stability.

Hi Charlie, My! You are a brave one to enter here! I'm just stupid! Are we speaking of roach (bow arch!) or 'banana back', the opposite? I've always resented way clubs all over expediently modify the Standard to oblige local scene. It only encourages greater trend toward very thing for which they made modification in first place - if that makes sense? Idiotically, I think all Shepherds should first and foremost be a working animal (and have anatomy to suit), as intended from beginning of Breed, and the Showing part ought to be only supplementary thereto. I look at some animals now and cringe at the excessive angulation and unnatural arching, but that's only me! Help me out here, Charlie and Blitz.
