Best Wishes to Karen Sinclair and Ule in their quest for Universal Sieger.  They are headed off to Wisconsin for the regional championship there.    Thus far, only Zar has qualified for the Nationals, AFAIK.

It is NOT a piece of cake to make a run for Universal Sieger.  It takes LOTS of time, energy, and discretionary expenditures to just qualify for the performance portion.  My hat is off to all those who did not trivialize and diminish the title by cynically "decalring" for it, when they had NO intention (as some pointed out from the outset) of making any effort to do more than use it as a marketing ploy.

Best Wishes to Karen & Ule, Ted & Zar and Ravi and Juno!

I agree. Best wishes to all who legitimately intended and did complete the requirements for consideration. If the rules don't change, I think a lot of us should "declare" next year...

What the hell?

To those who completed the requirements, or made a real effort to do so.  Stuff happens, and sometimes we can fall a wee bit short of the required 270, of "LIFE" up and prevents one from participating in a regional.    But, those would still be legitimate declarations, IMO.

I would like to see a requirement that a dog/bitch must be trialed in a USA-sanctioned trial within the 6-12 months PIROR to the Sieger Show to even declare.  That would cut down on the lying sacks whose dogs never have and never will partidipate in a USA-sanctioned ( or GSSCC-sanctioned, for that matter) trial.  Emphasis on "USA-sanctioned"= trials in "sweet water" don't count.

just switch the requirements.  you MUST compete in the National Championship, then the Seiger Show.  so much easier.

Okay, so its not really changing the requirements, just changing the order in which you must do them.

Frankly, I think changing the order is a pretty good idea. Personally, due to the logistics (and costs of those logistics) of competing inherent in such a big country, with far fewer opportunities to compete for titles and ratings than in Germany, I liked the GSDCA-WDA and GSSCCC idea of holding the entire competition at the same place on the same long weekend.

I can't believe how much it COSTS to continue in this sport for anyone who aspires to compete at anything higher than local club level once or twice a year. A friend of mine and I were discussing this at practice alongside the protection field in San Jose last spring. My friend and her husband had only brought 3 dogs to the event. The trip cost them over $3500. and they weren't living large there, either. It cost me over $1500. for the week, one dog only. I shared my room with another woman and the mini-van THREE ways. Didn't eat much... The show/trial I was in last weekend, (160 miles away, three nights) ended up costing me $700. when all was said and done, and I only spent one night in a cheap hotel, bought only one dinner, thanks to the hospitality of the members of the host club. How many times a year can most of us do that?

One of my biggest concerns for the future of our sport in this country is the cost. What with so many helpers charging $35-75. PER DOG, PER SESSION, the price of gas, hotels, hosting events at one's home club, the cost of just getting all one needs to get to the Korung has gone through the roof! Had it cost so much to participate and compete in the sport 10-15 years ago, when one's club dues covered all training expenses except getting there (also relatively cheap) entry fees were $20-35., a decent motel could be had for $40./night, and a week of van rental was around $200 or less, I for one would not have all the titles I do. I had more disposable income back in the 80's and 90's, as did a lot of us.

I do want to applaud the organizers of the major events here. Their diligence in working with host and alternate hotels, negotiating room rates in good hospitality locations, (still around $100./night incl. tax) keeping food affordable at on-site food concessions, makes a huge difference. We MUST continue to fight the good fight, keep our beloved sport affordable for the average working family, lest only personal wealth determine the future of the breed and the sport in this country.

I'm climb back down off my soap box now.

I totally agree, Shelley. I know I have to skip the Seiger show this year, after all is said and done with gas, hotel, food, lost work hours, entries, I just cannot afford it right now.  The working class folks are usually the ones with H.O.T. dogs, too.  Schutzhund is just one of many great things suffering under our economy.

If I weren't sharing the entire trip, or it were any farther away, I couln't possibly go to KY. As it is its going to be very difficult. I don't think I've ever seen a gray or black working line dog jump out of a Lincoln Navigator. Ha ha ha. More often an older Explorer or the back seat of a high mileage economy car with the seat removed.

Good luck to Karen and Ule!
