Hello all! I am interested in importing a GSD from Germany. I have currently talked to one breeder from there and asked them about their guarantees/warrantees, which they informed that there Germany gives NO guarantees against genetic defects. Now why would I purchase a dog from someone who gives no guarantees. I give lifelong guarantees (replacement pups) with all my dogs if there are any genetic problems! Am I so different from the breeders in Germany? If anyone knows of a respectable breeder over there with whom I could contact I would surely appreciate the information or any suggestions that any of you may have who have imported before. Thanks! Peggy, I have bought a few dogs from Germany, Denmark, Holland and Belgium. I don't know any german breeders who give guarantees on their puppies. And I can understand why because once the puppy is shipped stateside anything can happen. I know alot of the american breeders give guarantees on their pups, but when you get down to it most of those guarantees aren't worth the paper they are written on (hopefully present company not included). A lot of them as like you give a replacement puppy, but this means more time lost raising a puppy up and hoping it turns out okay. The only european breeders I know that give any kind of guarantee (from my limited experience) are some breeders in Denmark. They guarantee the dog to be physically sound enough to pass the Koerung, but they charge almost triple the price as most german breeders. What alot of people I know do is to find a breeding of their liking and buy 2 or 3 pups out of the litter and raise them up and keep the best one for themselves and sell or give (if it has problems)away the other. Lets face it, all the pups in a litter are not going to turn out like you wish they would, no matter how good the breeding is, so you can easily greatly increase your chances of getting a good one by buying more than one. No matter how you shake it buying a puppy is rolling the dice, even if there is a guarantee involved. Your best bet is buying a young dog with the qualities you are looking for, it will cost more money, but this way you can get what you want. Country-Boy

Peggy you would purchase a dog from Germany because they cost less than they do here. Part of the reason they cost less is they are not guaranteed. Yes you are different than the breeders in Germany. They know puppies are a risk. The American public thinks buying a pupy is like buying a car. They want guarantees. It's two totally different concepts that you will not change. Being a first time buyer, chances are, you will get a middle to poor quality pup from all the breeders there. The best are reserved the breeders themselves, then for show homes.

I would suggest contacting Bill Kulla at www.kulladogs.com. Bill routinely imports dogs from Germany and I've never seen a lemon yet. Judy

The white dog, Taz, was purchased to produce therapy/assistance dogs. He is only going to be bred to Gabby, who also carries the white masking gene (her mother was a white). This is to produce a certain type of temperament which has in the past, produced dogs that are working in therapy, as assistance dogs and for Search and Rescue. My entire litter is spoken for and will all be working, if they turn out like we expect them to. Anyhow...thanks so much for the information about German Imports. I had MANY people write to me off board and give me some excellent leads. I welcome any more leads also. Yes My guarantee needs to be updated...I have changed it roughly 6 times now to include anything that needed to be changed because of individual circumstances. I now guarantee hip/elbow dysplasia to 26 months in order to give people the time to get OFA's, Penn Hips done. I will specifically guarantee VW, Cardiac, Bloat/torsion, THyroid, MegaE and will list more as I determine what else needs to be listed. I am working with a genetics group who reports all genetics problems and tries to breed carries to non carriers or takes them out of their breeding program. I wish more breeders did this. Peggy

Yikes! A guarantee against Bloat/torsion? That is a risky business, particularly since you have no control over the feeding habits etc. that can lead to bloat. I wish it were realistic and possible to guarantee everything- but no matter what, S*** happens! What about Pancreatic insufficiency???

What about Auto Immune Disease, Heart Defects, CDRM, Mega Osophegus, Heamophilia, Missing Teeth, Soft Ears, Hooked Tails, Bad Characters (shyness, nervousness, overagressiveness, fear biters), lack of prey drive, etc etc etc? Where do you stop? You are buying and selling dogs a living thing, not a piece of furniture. Could anybody guarantee their kids will be free from genetic faults? No of course not, genetic engineering isnt that simple. IMO no-one can guarantee the health of any living thing, to do so is to 'con' someone into a false sense of security. The only thing anyone can ever 'Honestly' guarentee is to say you have used your knowledge and experience to reduce the risk and thats all.

Some have figured out how to offer fabulous warranties. It's simple. I call it the Walker Muffler guarantee. Go to the auto parts store and ask for a muffler. It's 30 bucks for ther one that fits your car. Want the lifetime one? It's 60 bucks. What's the difference? Absolutely nothing. They are banking you'll not need another and if you do; It's OK you already bought two. They can afford to give you another. Think of what this could mean..... Want a VA dog??? I'll guarantee you this pup will go VA. I know he doesn't have testicles, but I'll put it in writing. He's only 600,000. If he does not go VA. It's OK. I'll by a VA male and give him to you.
