kitkat,  don't get so huffy.  Most of us that disagreed with your high and mighty point of view are horse owners.  Do not DARE to tell me or any of us that we don't give a crap.  I have owned horses for 46 years, have you ever owned even one?

I don't think we should ban the slaughter--what else are we going to do with the overpopulation of unwanted horses in the US? I don't want to eat horsemeat, but I don't think it should be illegal.

But we should create and enforce *humane* slaughter laws. If the transport methods are cruel--ban the cruelty.

Actually it is legal to eat it in the U.S., you just can't slaughter them here.

Are you kidding me, I've owned and broke horses for over 40 years. It's not the "humane manner" that I have a problem with. Have you been to a horse auction lately where the skinniest of horses that have already been trampled down by the others horses are forced to get on their feet, than are whacked over their exposed bones  by the scum running some of these sales. IT IS CRUEL and inhumane. I DO NOT HAVE ANY HIGH and MIGHTY points of view. I have this little thing called "Compassion"

The ol' grey mare she ain't what she used to be' but she will be buried at "Maple Rest" when her time comes. And the message I started the post with comes from the HUMANE SOCIETY (nothing to do with Peta)   Conyers-Burton Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act.

Humane Society of the United States has close ties with PETA and the same agend.  do not confuse you local humane society which used to do some good, with the HSUS which is behind so many of the "animal rights' bills with PETA.

I never said I was for the inhumane treatment of any animal, not once.  What I said was horse slaughter was a viable option and better then the animals getting turned lose and starving, or starving in their own pastures.  At least when it was legal in the US there were USDA inspectors on site to keep things under control.

I am looking forward to your posting more horse pictures of equines you will buy and save from going to slaughter when the people can no longer care for them. When the person has the choice of feeding their family or buying hay (I am feeding one bale a day at $18 per bale where I am right now and that was before the floods wiped out a bunch) or medications the horse may need.  If you support the removing an option for the owner to sell an animal, you need to be willing to assume some responsibility for that animal.

Kitkat I don't think anyone here who has owned horses don't give a crap about them, its just the opposite. It has always been sad to see horses being sold to the meat buyers for whatever their venue for them is. Some are resold at a profit, I know, I have waited to long to bid and gone and bought one 15 minutes later to the tune of $400.00 more than he did. The point is if people get in a financial situation they and have no other choice the US auction yards were a better alternative than nothing. The horses being turned loose to make it on their own are going to die a slow agonizing death. Some will  make it, but alot will not. I also think there are to many laws to begin with, I am not in favor of government or any entity taking away anymore of what I consider my rights to make my own choice on matters in my life.
I got this pic this morning from a friend whose relative was at the last sale. This mare went for $200.00, she was about a 4-5 year old, quiet in the ring, seemed healthy except she was blind in her left eye. I had just arrived so did not see who bought her...The last two sales surprisingly, none of the horses were in poor condition, meaning starved.
