Quote:   I remember hearing myself say that... once upon a time, in a land far, far away...

Hey.................... I was gonna say that.

Misbeeb....I think I know where you're coming from, but there are instances where they are indispensible.

I never saw a use for them (I do just fine w/a prong, and I don't compete, so "flash" isn't an issue) until I got my horses and wanted to take my dogs on trail rides w/them. I didn't feel like holding a long line, so I use the ecollar as an "emergency back-up" in case something happens and I need to quickly stop my dog from doing something dangerous. I just showed him what it was all about a few times so he'd know how to respond, and so far so good. He will take on a horse if he feels the horse is doing something aggressive or dangerous....so I can't have him doing that when I'm riding; a dog attacking him is not going to calm my horse down any. Under 99% of circumstances, the dog behaves off leash beautifully, but I think it is naiive and dangerous to assume there will never be a disobeyed command. Thus, the e collar as back up. I honestly haven't used it more than once when I told him to platz and wait while the horse got some energy out of his system.

What other means would work this well in this situation? I'm merely pointing out that they serve their purpose; to each their own. Don't do something you're not comfortable with.

It's just totally alien to me.  It's been a few years since I've done any serious training and then, it was Ob & WT.  Maybe, I should never say never lol.  I can understand your "back up".

Well... you can all say, "told you so" if I ever do!

Good point to bring up. No one should think about using one w/out proper training. Weekend Warriors shouldn't use them at all, IMO. Too much room for error, and that's counterproductive and unfair to the dog.

What happened to all the video? It sure is nice to see what people are out doing. I try to learn someting or take something from every one I watch.

Jenni, thank you for pointing out my spelling and grammer errors. You see I always have to post real quick and I spend a fast majority of my time writing reports that have to be 100% correct, so forgive me if I don't give this silly board and my posts the same attention to detail.

You allude to your experience and expertice so you could end all speculation with a few examples....

Anyway, I would LOOOOOOVE to see some video of whatever it is you do (since it is not sport) Perhaps you could show me a thing or two? I know a few ring people so let me know what club it was you saw all the abuse. I could probably find out it is really is the way they train

I admire people who put it out there for all to see. Even if it is not the best, at least it shows you do something with your dog. As my club grows I will be posting alot of video of our progression. People can critique, comment, whatever.

I don't claim to be the best in the world but I think someone just beat me out for biggest ego on the database.

I am anxious to see your stuff........

Anyone else out there let's see what you got. I like watching dogs work much more than reading about it.
