I don't know how to respond to REAL DOG,   I know what I like in a dog.
I have three real dogs.  I have one stuffed toy dog and a boneless chuck.
I'm a middle of the road sorta guy and I have one great dog, a pup whos got a long way to go, and a rescue.
No extremes.

Real dog, has four paws, full jaw of teeth :) oh yeah pair of eye's and pair of ears lol.

If you can touch it than it should be real, unless yourdreams are so intense lol.

I consider my girl a real dog, and since she is a Stormfront's Brawnson granddaughter, and a Lord great granddaughter, I would have to vote for them.

those are examples of dogs you think are real.  of course if you can touch them they would be real.   i  believe what the OP wants to know are what characteristics make a dog "real".

everyone has there own idea of a "real" dog.  most commonly people associate a dog that will protect, bark, bite, on command without any type of prey item involved (sleeve, bite suit, etc.) .   a dog that can be alerted to be on gaurd without provocation.

cant wait to see what others have to say.

Level headed, can take anywhere without having to be afraid of what he might do or how he might  react. However, understands before I do, this is not a good situation and lets me know BEFORE he takes care of it (I just have to be smart enough to understand what signals he is sending). Even if he does not agree or like it, is willing to take direction from me. One that would be capabile and not afraid to protect only if truely needed, understands the difference. Let me push the envelope, also understands what type of force maybe needed in a given situation. examples:
no one at home, stranger comes in, gets them to leave rather quickly>no contact needed, someone gets in my car at stop light >tear him up.

I have a male rottie at home that is awesome, However, as I am writing this I am thinking, I also now have a 10 month old that does not have a fear bone,  With the excitment of the dogs I might have lost the cool heads, prevailing. I also have spayed female GSD but she takes her cues from the rott. The pup is a male gsd  and is ready to rumble at a drop of a hat.

Any thoughts on the cool heads, I know if they are seperated, but if they are together, I am thinkng getting amped and loss of cool head.

Some want a dog to be a tool, some want it as a trophy, some like myself want a brother, or sister.  A part of my family, always there, always involved, unconditional love, a part of me, that connection.  The protecting and the loyalty come with that connection.  Then there is that personality, they have it just as we do, there has to be intelligence in that personality.
We have to like each other.  Then there is the beauty, the beauty of the breed, not just conformation and good physical condition, and good health, things like that and the loyalty, the courage, their speed and power, the instincts, the feeling you get when they look you in the eyes and you both know what the other is thinking.   All these things are the German Shepherd dog and more, more than a bite, or a ribbon, or what its ancestors did.
Then finally there is the absolute beauty, The dog that just moves so and has that presence that just takes your breath away.  Maybe gives you that hair up the back of you neck thing.   You say I wish that dog was mine..then your dog gives you a dirty look ..LOL

I dunno, I love the dogs I have and I wouldn't trade places with any of you.
