From a breeder's or owner/handler's perspective? That will make a big difference.
Mink vH Wittfeld would be at the top of my list either way. Might've been kinda ugly to some, but he was a strong dog that produced well. Another I'd like to have had would've been Fado Karthago for similar reasons. Though I think I'd have preferred to has Afra Stoppenburgerland, then bred her to Harro Lechrainstadt, then taken one of those females to Mink.
Anyway, it really depends on your preference and what you like to do. It's fun to play what if games, but we have to do the best with what's available and make good breeding decisions. My above selections probably would not be chosen by modern day sport people, as the dogs do not perform to the level that modern judging likes to see.

First and foremost my attached at the hip Engelchen von Vietz who lives up to her name. After her, VA 2 Sir von der Arenzburg (son of VA 3 Erasmus van Noort)

My reasons were not financial at all, I find many dogs whose temperament I really like end up going back on Karly. There is a police K9 I know one county over that is linebred on Karly, I'd take him home in a heartbeat.

Dog of the past? Probably I would pick Chuligan z Pohranicni Straze.
Dog of the present? Probably would pick either Falk von den Wolfen, or his son, Amon von Patriot

I cannot choose; I grew up with a GSD/Border Collie mix..."Sarge" could run a sustained 40 mph, had unnatual ball drive, and was the best protection for a family imaginable. My current girl, "Colie" (Nicole), is a GSD/Malamute mix; she is even more intelligent, protective, and agile than Sarge. Her only drawback is her unbrideled aggression toward Shiloh Shepherd dogs, and a tendency toward jumping into bed when you really need to sleep alone. She is actually TOO smart; she has locked me out of the house twice, as she not only has the ability to open most doors, she can lock them behind you as well. If the door is operated by a lever, she has total control. I have not as yet had to break into my residence once she locked me out, but if I ever forget my key.... I could never choose between these two, and I have had Rottweilers that broke my heart when I had to take them on that last trip to the animal hospital.
