The age at which most of my clients complain of their dog beconing over protective at the door, etc., can range from 8 months to about 20 months. Every dog matures at a slightly different rate.

well one of the last times someone ran up behind us they stopped and grabbed my butt which i did not like so now i freak out when someone comes running up like that.
hodie spunky has been extensively socialized. that was part of her training as a young pup.
i have noticed that she gets a bit more watchful when she is in heat but then not so much after. (and no, i don't breed her, and have no plans to. i don't see spaying as necessary since she is never left outside unattended.)
she tends to bark only if fluffy barks first, and if fluffy is really going off then spunky will put hackles up and bark ferociously but only if someone is in front of us, and more likely if it is a group of people. even then, if they keep approaching, say hello and look at the dogs with smiles on their faces, spunky relaxes and wags her tail. if they stop to pet her then she just loves them up, whining and rubbing against them.
after the latest incident, spunky seemed to be looking out more on our walk tonight, and she looked at the passersby, and looked at me, waved her long tail as they smiled and went past. fluffy usually goes off if they are loud and nobody was loud tonight so we just walked by people and that was it.
i never said i had any interest in protection training.
i don't want a dog that lunges at everybody and is a liability. been there,  done that. that situation was my fault.
i just want a dog that barks and i already have that in my poodle. i merely asked a question and am happy with the answers. i have a perfect combination of dogs. fluffy alerts and if spunky has enough time to think about it then she barks too but some things just happen so fast......some dog hater stopped to yell at me one nite cuz i didn't get out of his way fast enough and fluffy went off on him. he swung his bag trying to hit her and she got really frightened while spunky just stood there looking at him, kind of puzzled......
she was barking and growling at sudden approaches of strangers at age 11 weeks and around a year she was doing so more, but i discouraged it as i was training her as my service dog. i have discontinued that as i have decided i don't really need one. anxiety was all in my head. so now both dogs are just fun family pet dogs.
so anyway thanx all for your replies. i cannot change old opinions. some have judged me and everyone is entitled to thier own opinion. have a great day and merry christmas everybody.

For those of you who don't know, Fluffy is a standard poodle, therefore large enough to be a visual deterrent as well as doing the barking and growling.
