autobahn,

Go crawl back under your rock.  Nobody asked you, nobody cares what you think.  Try something different, make yourself useful & go be a speed bump in a school zone.

Must be her husband! Or related to him.

One thing that I can suggest next time( hope never need for ) try to put a used trans on your old  truck(  exceed the price of repair)  . as for 700r4 they are a lot of them on the road  plus  for repair kit should not exceed 200.to 250 including the T converter and to tear down and rebuilt around 300 and to pull and install 150 . this is for someone knows the bussiness. most  trans shops are biggest crook in the car mechanic  world. I bit you can buy rebuilt or used on on ebay a lot cheaper  .I would go for used one it would be cheaper and faster plus you do not have to bring the truck back to the same shop if it brakes again. I know it is too late now .but next time if you need advice on repair PM me or PM me for my phone # and keep it with you I be Glad to help you to get to CA .

Made it 320 miles down I-81 to Ft. Chiswell, VA. Pulled off for fuel. Almost ran over the top of the car exiting in front of me when the van would hardly stop. :-O Engine revving really high when I put it in park. Lucky there was a truck mechanic there who reached in the engine, pulled out a little thingie that looked like a thin roman coin (Bushing?) and informed me it would run okay but I can't kick it down into passing gear anymore till I get some cable fixed. I asked if this is something that should have been addressed when they rebuilt the transmission. He said yes.
By then it was cold,, dark, dogs needed walking, so I gave up and checked into a Super 8.

Didn't get to bed till about 12:30. The first room I got had a faulty heater, so had to move. Didn't sleep well either, worried about what is going to break next time I turn that van on. The trip is really telling on the dogs and I at this point. 11 days. I walk them 4-6x a day, but they aregetting restive. Normally we could have been there and back by now!

Voice gone this morning. I don't even want to look at that van, let alone drive it on a Sunday when all shops are closed.

I left the asshole exactly 6 mos from today. Who would of thought I'd be in the worse shape I've ever been in my whole life on this momentous anniversary? I can't wait to get to Peggy and Gary's. The little apt in the back has been the "Designated Fresh Start" apartment for women "in transition" for about 15 years. The line of tenants is long and distinguished. All I have to do is GET THERE. Tall order at this distance under the circumstances, but I'm going out to try to slug a few more miles out as soon as I finsih my coffee.

Time to get dressed and feed/walk dogs again, check fluids and MAYBE hit the road.
Note the extension cord running into the side doors of the van. My little ceramic space heater kept it warm enough inside that the dogs are comfy, water in their pails not frozen. MUCH easier than breaking down crates and bringing them all in the motel, then re-packing in the morning a few hours later.

This would all be so much more tolerable if I weren't by myself. No volunteers for a ride-along on the Trip From Hell.
So I have an early I phone I bought with money from my JOB last summer. The good news is it still works with a cracked screen after it fell out my pocket and the wrecker (don't ask me which wrecker, there have been so many on this journey) ran over it!

No precipitation forecast for the rest of the journey. :-))) Just COLD. This will be the first time on any trip Barstow will look GOOD. Lots of repair shops there. :-/  I know. I've been in a few of them over the decades. LOL

Time to check route, walk dogs after their breakfast and hit the road. (I hope)

  • Go home.
  • Get a job (2 jobs, more like... maybe 3)
  • Get back on feet.
  • Start paying both back and forward for the last six months of hell.
Sounds like a plan alright.
Let's start with "Go Home."
Oh yeah, that's what I am doing now. (or trying to...)
What a coincidence!  Only about 2700 miles to go!

Thanks Autobahn.

Keep your chin up Shelley, you can do it, you've got this far.

by eichenluft on 10 January 2010 - 14:01

Not sure I would classify the last 6 months of relaxing and enjoying warm comfortable safe places for you and 6 dogs to stay in the last 6 months as "Hell", but ok.

Sorry you're having troubles with the Chevy - I would have hoped it would be more reliable, like all of my Chevy's have always been.  That would be very stressful, thank goodness family finally stepped up to the plate to help you when you needed it the most.  Friends will help as they can, but it's family who you should really be able to count on in the end when friends fizzle out and exhaust themselves trying to.  Family is always there, or should be.

Carry on, I know you are strong enough inside to do it, all on your own.  Help from friends and family a bonus and a relief when it comes.  Things will look better soon.
