ahem - the numbers above are pretty high for his pups don't they affect his number? Look up the other pups on the database on the SV ZW screen, the litter I looked up is even higher

Zidane's ZW will not change a lot , because most of his progeny is in belgium or other countries and will not get x-rayed in germany...therefore, zidane puppies with good hips will not be able to affect his ZW and get it down...

by jocks on 27 October 2005 - 10:10

basically, do not factor in ZW unless it's a german bred dog, residing in germany. Everything else is not an accurate representation of what the dog is really producing. If zidane trows a couple dogs with mediocre hips in germany, and 50 litters of a normal in belgium, he will have a very high zw, although he produces good hips.

Jocks could not have explained it better. When we got Zidane the high ZW was my first concern. As I did the background work on him, I was told that a Belgian dog starts out with a high ZW because it is Belgium and it never goes down no matter what, which was not explained to me. His older offspring at trials, that I can track, have good hips, A hips. He is a B...I was also told that a “B” hip rating in Belgium is more strict than the German rating, which I do not know for a fact, just telling what was told to me. Anyway, so far, his puppies from this kennel with x-rays done by the ortho vet we use in Birmingham are good, in fact real good. Perhaps he has produced some bad hips in Europe; he had thirty-seven breedings and he and the females were shepherds. I do think his rep (since he came to this country) about bad hips, bad spine, etc. etc. came about by another kennel with a high profile stud, for a reason. We have little outside stud due to this bad press, but this does not concern us. We got him for our stud and he is amazing; his puppies are as well. I heard, like everyone else about Magbert’s hip production, but he produced ZIDANE, one of the most amazing dogs in the World. When he left Belgium, Zender stepped up to the plate because he too, is a dog like Zidane. We had a litter from he and Daggi and they were super, as well. Some of Zidane’s puppies are on the PennHip data base.

Hello Jocks The ZW info is not entirely correct. I have 2 dogs that were born outside Germany and got German "a" stamps. The first male got a ZW 90 and the female got a ZW 73. Both dogs had parents that were born and raised in Germany and my dogs ZW numbers had a lot to do with their ZW numbers. Although I do not know exactly what the formula is. Neither ZW numbers have changed at all, because no prodginy are in Germany or have been "a" stamped, but neither one was given 100 automatically. Frank

I can speak for Zidanes power in the protection work, and seeing him in training in the other phases, and it is very rare to witness a dog as great as Zidane that takes it to another level of drive in the bitework. His grips were always full and powerfull on me, and from the offspring i have seen at alabamak9 , you could ask puppies of that age to do more, and it seemed to be very natural to the puppy not imprinted. My 2 cents

correction ( you couldn't ask puppies of that age to do more )

I live in the UK and was very lucky to use Zidane on my German imported female, we kept a female pup who is 13 months old, she is probably the best animal we have ever owned or bred, she is being trained by my 22 yr old daughter who is a training novice, this young female pup is ready to begin her Sch Career and her work is exceptional. She is due to have her hips scored in the near future but the way she jumps around and completees her work at 100mph I do not think she will have a problem. Zidane is one of the Best dogs I have had the good fortune to see, and I have the good fortune to visit Belguim, Holland and Germany together with Czech and Slovak republic and I have yet to see a dog as good as him, so if he is your doorstep, this is one dog I would use again and again. I have nothing monetary to gain, but I know Johnny well and he is a lucky man to have worked this animal. I hope you use him and get a good litter as I was lucky to do. Dave

hello Unknow frank ? My ZW info is correct. A dog who gets a Belgium/FCI B rating (which is a very stricter ruling than the SV one, he would have a good chance of getting SV a normal) will automatically get a ZW of 100. Cause that is the breed average. People seem to get a kick out of ZW in the 60'ies and 70'ies, but a dog with a ZW of 99 is still doing better than average on hip production! But like I said, the ZW is not an accurate representation for dogs not living in Germany.
