YR not sure if this has been mentioned but Use moth balls in all the pompus grass here and under our shed.  It does help.  It has to be replaced over time becaus eit wears down but maybe you could use it around your out buildings and such.  We have had an awful lot of snakes her in South Carolina this year and the spiders are TERRIBLE!!!!!  I wish you the best of luck with this.   I agree with most here...SHOT THE BASTARDS.

Yikes! I wonder what is going on! I live in South Florida and we had a Copperhead in our yard for the first time in 26 years! Fortunately he was killed (not by me). Others in our area have seen them as well. I am much more careful now when walking through our yard and I do not let our dogs out unsupervised (of course, I never did).  Very scary indeed.

YR So sorry to hear about your son. Sometimes life is so unfair. My heart goes out to you and your son. I will be praying for him.

I spoke to several breeders up around Dallas and they have seen lots of snakes this year.. The feed store man here said YES  , the snakes are bad this year.

RooKA:  Yes I am putting out MOTH BALLS       I ran out of sulfur this afternoon.  I , now know, why my son gripped at me every year, to mow , mow and mow all the leaves...I said NO i like leaves to walk on not dirt...Well today I mowed for two hours.....leaves....and dirt ..

Leaves and more dirt...got tired and never got under the huge holly tree as I must trim some more lower limbs. I mowed around my house three times just to let them know   I am out here.  One pen needs to be weeded but I was afraid to go in it by myself. It is up against my back wall with is a concrete block wall with an exit under my house. , with a cover..but I do not want to be inside an enclosure and look down and a serpent bigger than my leg trap me in the pen...so I will throw moth balls in the pen till someone comes to help me which will be Monday ...I am going to the Balloon Races in Longview tomorrow . It is suppose to be 100* by 12 noon so I am packing my water and white clothes and hope I survive the heat.

I put a line of sulfur around both kennels and a line from nursery along the barn to the front of barn and surrround the barn steps and the dock of the barn and on the half side where a lot of tine and poles and outdoor poles are leaning against the barn.. Also put a line of sulfur around the front trees by kennel and I lined the water hoses down and up the hill with sulfur. The stench of it may deter them..

Guess I will sell Cataba worms to pay for sulfur and moth balls..Don't you freeze them like   12 in a container and sell them for  $2.00???

I am going out in a few and do some raking of leaves away from trees and  away from fence lines and the east side of house by the a/c unit...so thick I really am afraid to even try to move the leaves. Maybe I need to hire me a laborer to come out and do all this  digging the under leaves and brush like stuff and weed eat the part by the woods in rear of property.??

I still have leaves by the well house I discovered to day and ground cover there is thick also.  SO moth balls here we come.

Me Jane where is Tarzan?

Thanks Raymond for the beautiful  Birdhouse !

Well I fed in the dark with outdoor lights and a flash light and shovel on lawnmower and didnt run into  a snake at this moment..but I am not thru yet.  I took a picture of a toad  on the back porch by my shoes covered with DE> behind a big clay pot. Cute..Do the snakes eat the big frogs?  I have hundreds of tiny frogs evereywhere....

..

YR

YES, copperheads eat toads, that's probably their main food source in your yard!  Maybe if you look into finding a way to keep the toads away, the snakes will follow.

Don't start killing toads,
Though they might eat one it's not their primary prey.
Pit Vipers hunt warm blooded prey, they are not there in search of food.
Breeding can cause them to travel as will weather, rains and flooding can drive them from their normal range, it has the same effect on their prey.
Young snakes travel from the place of their birth to search out new territory.
Leave the toads alone, they have their own purpose.

Honestly,
If you want peace of mind consider protecting an area with this barrier I described, and if you want a weapon, sharpen up a garden hoe, it's long and light weight and you can attach a flash light to it with tape.

YR

Go to the store and get some "Snake Shot" for that .38 Special.  It fits both .38 and .357.  Works great just like having a small Shotgun.

One thing that helps around my place is to keep the grass cut short I mow and bushhog very close to the ground then weed eat all borders or use round up.  Snakes prefer tall grass.  I do not have any monkey grass borders or pampass grass. they will lay up in those.

It's tough maintaining the property during the heat (100 today and will be 103 on Sunday + 80-90% humidity).  But its better than snakes.

By the way, Guineas will only kill the babies but adults will alarm at anything unusual.  Geese on the other hand are better equipped for the larger snakes 12-18".  We are lucky that we have a pair of Red Tailed hawks that raise 3-4 babies a year.  It is not unusual to see them flying with snakes in their talons.
