Reading one of the other threads here tonight, there was some discussion on editing, changing, adding to pedigrees whatever you want to call it.

I personally think it's great that the database is open source because it allows the registered members to post their dog's pedigrees and fill in a lot of holes. But, seems there's a problem with people changing pedigree and registration on dogs they don't own and never have owned.

Personally if someone messed with my dog's info on here, I'd be extremely pissed off about it. Sometimes, there is certain info deliberately left off by the dog's owner. Like registration numbers and A stamp results. The "changes" feature on pedigrees is great and I'm pretty sure Oli can lock a pedigree from changes if asked by the owner and there's a good reason to it.

Questions/suggestions:
Is it possible to include in the new TOS or somewhere that changes to any info will not be made by anyone other then the person who registered the dog here originally? Unless say the dog had died?

Can a place for elbow ratings and maybe date of death be included also? Those would be way cool to have.

Thanks!

Mobjack:

I totally agree with your suggestion. I deliberately left registration numbers off of several of my dogs and recently had to purposely delete half of the info as I discovered someone using his pedigree info.   I helped the Ast Da of Harris Co prosecute a man who took my akc numbers and made up names to his clients for pups he sold them  . That same dog he stole several years later , which he was arrested for , and was prosecuted with 3 felonies for the puppies . A lot of people have no idea how many registered info is used right off of the info printed in public sites that hold these for the public.

I noticed the other night a breeder posted his pedigree under the name of  11111 and 22222  and 33333...I wonder if that is the real name . I laughed as I never saw a dog named that. It was in the right hand column and was being submitted as I looked at them..Import dogs..NOT a bad idea name.   sounds funny to say  oh my dogs name is  11111...lol

 Another suggestion...

A list of all members' real name and their username be made available.....If that member has more than one username, all usernames must be listed for that person....That way we would all know who we are talking to....Unless a person has something to hide, there should be no problem letting others know who they really are, and who they are associating with....

I agree that the curret registered owner of a dog should be able to lock the pedigree.

Locking a pedigree to prevent someone from adding or editing FALSE information would be a good idea....I myself had a pedigree edited, which I did not do myself....I had no problem with it, because the person added info that could be verified as being truthful....At the time I submitted the pedigree, the information was not yet available.....I just forgot to put it later when I did have it......No big deal...

In the event that the pedigree had been edited with false information, than I would have been upset....

I thought that it could already be done now, if a person wanted a pedigree locked, they could requested it to a member of admin and it could be done...

While I certainly agree that someone adding false information to a pedigree here shouldn't be allowed, it's not up to the moderators or Oli to verify anything posted.

Basically, it's an honor system and people must be given a modicum of trust to provide proper and accurate information. Naturally, that trust will be abused by some people who wish to do harm for some reason or simply be malicious or a busybody.

Nona, I see you have missed my point entirely with this thread so I will make it simple.

If I own a dog, bred it, purchase it, whatever and I choose to post that dog's pedigree info here on this site, in my opinion, no one has the right to change, add, edit, take away or do anything else to that dog's information without my permission except the website owner. Verified correct or not. If I choose not to add my dog's registration numbers or anything else that is my business and maybe I just don't want that info all over this site.

Modulus Rex moderator comment:  Giving owners the ability to lock pedigrees from  outside alteration seems like a good idea that I will forward to site administration.  I am not so sure about locking all pedigrees so that only the original person who submitted it can change it, as there are plenty of old pedigrees here that are flat out incorrect, and it would seem to make sense for membership to be able to correct them.

The suggestion for elbow ratings is also good.

I'm also not as sure about date of death, as I could see some controversy arising from that, but I will still forward it.  Aside from the fact that such changes would need approval from Oli, remember too that there may be technical challenges that could prevent implementation - but that stuff's way above my head

Mobjack, I will make this simple also......I did not respond to your opinion..... I did not address you about your opinion... Personally, its your opinion, right or wrong, I don't care...I only stated MY OPINION, just as you stated yours....If you want your pedigrees locked, thats great for you..There is no need for you to explain anything to me....I don't really care.....

Simply put, it really doesn't matter if anyone agrees with my opinion or not...I did not put it here to get people to agree with me....I put it here just to voice my opinion....Hope this is worded simple enough for everyone to understand.....

I thought this thread was about addressing the moderators and Oli with ideas???

Now back to our topic.

What about a place for achievements beyond titles. Like for police dogs, SAR, therapy or any real working achievement? Suggestions?

The form and database changes should be easy to do, to add elbow ratings. Very good idea.

I believe Oli has a reason to keep the pedigrees unlocked and I have emailed him to get his answer.

The new TOS is in final draft 2  and should be ready for release in the next few weeks. It does have language to deal with pedigrees and we may look at beefing up the language to deal with people who maliciously change/deface pedigrees.

What about if the dog changes hands....the new owner might like to make changes and the original owner might not want to allow that to happen.
