maggie either  you don't understand dogs or your ego is so overblown you actually believe your dog would rather  die  than live without you.  Dogs are opportunistic optomists, they adjust very quickly, provided they are placed in an appropriate, good home.  They are dogs not furry, little people.

 "It angered and sickened me."

Now you know how some GSD enthusiasts feel when S/L's are reffered to as GSD.

Maggie in response to your question...

I work my dogs in schutzhund. both of them. But if it wasn't schutzhund I would be training in some other venue.

The point here is the physical attributes and the desire to work..aka want to learn a task by means of training.

The fact is the American Showline's physical characteristics lack the funcionality to do any kind of police work, or any physically demanding sport. And the temperaments lack the courage!

If you want to train a dog to do Schutzhund, agility, etc etc the dog needs ball and food drive. Without this, your efforts to teach the dog something is pointless!

The German Shepherd needs to be bred with some sort of drive to do a "job" and needs to be fearless. The dogs who lead the blind need to confident and willing to work all day....Same goes with police dogs. German Shepherds need work ethic- but a confident character to back up that ethic. This is what is lacking in the showlines. I bet you will not see an American showline in any  demanding police position.

And all this is what the German Shepherd was meant to be....
"The breeding of Shepherd dogs must be the breeding of working dogs. This must always be the aim or we shall cease to produce working dogs." Captain Max v Stephanitz

Now tell me, what should a German shepherd be? According to Max, the originator of the breed, this dog should be bred to be a working dog....whether or not the owners work them or not is whatever, but the dog should have the ability to work!!!!!!!!!!!

A dog will for the most part come to reflect the priorities put into his breeding. As much as I enjoy showing dogs, and have for close to 40 years, I do realize that a few short generations of the priorities being color, type, gait with character at the end of the list can in no way equal a dog with the same number of years put into character  as the first priority.

Breeding just not work that way. In no way do I mean this to bash s/l, it's what I have and I know there are excellent examples of character to be found. But the show placing is in no way an indication of character. I do think that as each generation goes by with more emphasis placed on gait/color etc. the good examples will diminish, just as they have in the Am. S/L.

Well said, Rik. I think that was my point. With all breeds.
