A discussion on kennel blindness - Page 2

So it looks like there's a few different meanings to the term and the way it's used.

YR obviously can't stick to the topic, or hasn't yet found a way to put my name in context with use of the term.  It's probably not in the dictionary, so who's to say what's right or what's wrong with the way you use the term.  Some people seem to try to use it like a derogative insult, kind of like "backyard breeder".

Back on topic, I've always thought of "kennel blindness" to mean what happens when you look at your dogs all day and can't step back and look at them objectively compared to the breed as a whole.  Example: You breed for large bone and eventually to you your dogs look normal, not large boned, but yet everyone else that sees them think they are.  Or you like extreme angles so you start picking the overangulated pups even though you don't intend to, but because TO YOU the dogs you have in your kennel start to look like they lack.  Just what happens from looking at your dogs/kennel all the time if you don't see enough contrast regularly.  Probably part of the cause for such extremes in the breed.

But I also understand that others would say it is when someone thinks what they are breeding is the best, their dogs can't be improved upon, or their practices are acceptable, when the majority would disagree.  To me this is just ignorance, cockiness, or close-mindedness, not actually being "kennel blind."

I don't know about you guys but I sure am glad all the breed's faults are in those other lines and not mine. I don't know who breeds all the faults into our breed but stick with me. I'll fix it.

so what happens next with these kennel blindess or ignorant breeder's? What road do they head down next?

Are these big time breeder that have this or smaller scale breeders?

What I dont get is, every Judge is different so in there mind they might like big boned gsd & at the next show that Judge like slope?  It really seems like you have to follow the Judge that likes your stock inorder to win with what you have....right?

learning can be so hard.....

To add, I think it's a natural human-nature thing, this kennel blindness, which is why serious breeders will ask for others to help evaluate their dogs.

Judges probably get this as well... watching the same type run around a ring all day.  Not to mention, they are probably biased towards ones that look like their dogs or what they wished their dogs looked like.

I'm guessing breeding a truly ugly, untitled male to a not-even-registered female who seriously looks like a mix breed, ummmm, qualifies.
