I am importing a puppy from Hungary that is being shipped from Frankfurt. I have paid the breeder the amount for the cost of the puppy and for the shipping. I received the email with the flight information and it gives me all the information I need but then it says Consignee (me) have to pay the customs clearance charges directly. What is this charge and how much does it normally cost? Thanks

Some airports will require that you get a customs broker. Some will let you clear the pup yourself, if you can clear it yourself then the normal fee is only $25 USD. A broker clears up all the red tape and there's no hassle with customs- but they charge from $150 and up for thier services.See if you can get copies of the vaccine passport first and they airway bill number- that way you can go to the customs office yourself with that information and clear the pup yourself at the point of arrival- my guess Atlanta on Delta?

Good question. You will pick up the dog at an airport, and since it is coming from a foreign land it will pass through customs as would any other type of good. I guess just call the airport and ask to be directed to U.S. customs for advice on the current charges for the "import fee". It could be several hundred dollars depending on the tariff schedule curently in place. I hope that you are pleasantly surprised. Bob-O

If the pup is coming in on Lufthansa the charge is now $30. You can contact the cargo office and then go there to pick up the paperwork then drive over to customs get the paperworked stamped and then drive back to the cargo ofice pay and pick up the pup. It isn't very hard to do it yourself, but some people pay the broker as it is faster and easier for them.

Can I email you privately the information that I was emailed and then you tell me if I have the numbers required to this? Also could I get the breeder to email a scanned copy of the vaccine passport. I am in New Orleans and there is no way i can get to Atlanta to clear the puppy could I do it over the phone and by faxing them needed information. Thanks so much

Gimme10mins, I should have thought more before I typed. You are probably going to be the sole owner of the dog and are not importing for resale, hence the import fee, and NOT a tariff schedule should apply. Good Luck, Bob-O

I heard something recently about the CDC out of Atlanta requiring dogs to be vaccinated for rabies before they are admitted into the USA. If they are not old enough for the vaccine, they are quarentined until that comes to pass. Has anyone had to comply with that, or is it even in effect? I heard it is a recent law. I think I saw that on one of these message boards in the pass 6 weeks or so. Stephen

Well I called the broker and the puppy is scheduled to arrive in my city at 8:10pm and I was told that the customs office would probably be closed by then. She said if I go through them it will cost 250.00 and i could pick my puppy up that night. If I do it myself I would have to wait until the next morning when customs opened again and take the originally clearance papers from the cargo office and clear the puppy myself. Im thinking I will do it myself. However she said that I maybe charged a kennel fee since the puppy will have to stay overnight. Any more input. How would they know if I chose to do the customs clearance myself? Do i call the broker and tell them that I will do it myself or do I just not pay and they understand that I plan on doing it myself?

Stephen, I just imported a pup in June. Customs does require that any pup older than 12 weeks be vaccinated for rabies 30 days before arrival. Otherwise, it must be quarantined until the vaccination is given PLUS 30 days. Fortunately, the person importing the pup can quarantine the pup himself, upon filing of the proper form - it's not like the pup gets held in some Customs cattle bin somewhere, you can still take him home. One not entirely legal but emminently practical way around this requirement is to have the folks exporting an older pup to get their vet to certify that the pup received his rabies vaccination 30 or more days before the date of shipment.

gimme10, based upon my one recent experience, the order of business goes like this if you do it yourself: 1. go to Lufthansa cargo terminal to pick up paperwork. 2. go to Customs to have paperwork stamped. 3. take stamped paperwork back to Lufthansa cargo terminal and pick up pup. Lufthansa won't release the pup to you without a Customs stamp approving the importation - so that's how they know you've been to Customs. Lufthansa did charge me a $25 "document fee" to obtain the paperwork - I'm not sure whether they collected it on behalf of Customs or if this was their own fee. I paid nothing at Customs, and it took exactly 1 minute and 30 seconds there (I don't think tremendous scrutiny is given to the documents, let's put it that way). So really, your only decision is do you want to pay an additional $225 to get the pup that night, or wait until morning.
