cherub, I couldn't find the NDF diet for sale? Found the other diet listed there but never could find the link to the NDF from phdproducts)??? I have an adult on canidae all life stages, another dog on Natures' Variety Raw instinct, and pup on honest kitchen with 1 of the meals a raw meat portion. Probably the pup is doing the best, followed by Nature's variety raw instinct, and last fave is the canidae. I have fed eagle pack before with good results too. Didn't do so well on royal canin gsd.

An old germans vet in a book about the german shepherd dog makes it very clear that bitches and pups should be fed raw liver, pork or beef doesnt matter.....He doesnt go into any other organ meats.......

Ive fed liver and heart for years with the raw chicken , necks  and wings and backs   , olive oil , fish caps, salmon  and veggies....all raw  partial cook the carrots, and 7 grain breads once in a while, and whole yard eggs....vit ester c , and sometimes port neck bones....

If you want to feed something that will improve your dog's health and appearance as well. I have two words for you "GREEN TRIPE".

Green tripe does not necessarily refer to it's color. In this instance it refers to the fact that it has not been touched - not cleaned, not bleached and not scalded. It's actual color is brown, however, sometimes there will be a greenish tint due to the grass or hay the animal ate just before slaughtering.
Nothing beats the "green" tripe from a freshly slaughtered animal.

I have tried many times to purchase it from the processing plants and frozen lockers here where I live.. Im told every time, that special facilities are needed, as once the stomach is opened, its an E Coli nightmare. The USDA will come down hard on anyone who would mess with it, so they refuse to sell.
The Green Tripe is available quite a few places on line.

I can just SEE myself finding/buying/hauling/preparing raw chicken parts in the hotel parking lot at the NASS for 6-7 dogs a couple of times a day.

Ha ha ha

NO kitchen, no easy way to wash hands, dishes, anything. Oh, maybe I could haul a few ice chests and a gross of latex gloves in my already packed-to-the-headliner van. I'm sure the hotel staff will love dumping the trash cans full of smelly chicken wrappers every day, especially if the weather is hot and sticky. After they get done pulling the stuff out of the dishes and dragging it all over their boxes while they eat it I can take the whole lot to the car wash, tie them to trees while I wash the boxes.

Can you spell c-o-n-t-a-m-i-n-a-t-i-o-n? I'd be lucky if I didn't poison MYSELF in the process! (speaking of BARF..!)

My poor deprived dogs are going to have to get by on dry dogfood and supplements.

or.... maybe I will open a concession out of the back of a refrigerator truck at all major events next year. Raw chicken for $7.50 a pound,  disposable dishes and mixing spoons?  Add uaranteed "environmentally friendly" trash disposal (wouldn't want to destroy the parking lot ecology) With that and my gold-leaf list of excuses for failing the protection work, sold ringside for $100./copy, I can probably pay for the whole trip!

I also feed a RAW or maybe fresh food diet is a better way to describe it. I am not against adding some grains occasionally and use things like canned salmon/sardines, green beans, pumpkin, applesauce, etc. so not totaly RAW. Recently, for convienience , I bought and tried a food called Orijen. It is totally grain free and made in Canada by Champion Pet Foods. They make only 2 types of dog food and the other is every bit as good too. No pills or other types of animal food in their manufacturing process. They raise alot of there own ingredients also. Now in my experience dogs when fed fresh the way I do normally look at dog food like, "whats that"? They do like this stuff. My puppy kept trying to get in the bag when I first got it, she never did that with Canidae (which I am very disappointed with right now). If your interested in checking out Orijen food (its spendy) here is a link to a site that I found to be the cheapest as anything over $50 is shipped free. www.k9cuisine.com  Just search Orijen on their homepage or check out all their foods and treats. They say they are all natural stuff but I have mailnly just bought Orijen from them.

Egsd why are you so freaking obnoxious on every post?

I believe that many people go way overboard on their dog's rations.  There are many dry dog foods that are adequate.  Reminds me of the guys at the gym lifting weights, that all they talk about are their "supplements" that they take, for this and for that.  Sure, it is probably a little better to do this or that, but economically, it isn't worth it.

Give your dog a decent dry dog food (Purina, Iams, Diamond, etc) along with some treats and table scraps, and they will do just fine.

Okay, before ya'll tear me up for those comments, I have a question.

There are people that have large snakes, pirahna fish, and other "pets" that feed live food to their pets.  So, how many here would feed live food to their dogs, if it was "better" or if it was "necessary"?  Would you throw some live chickens, ducks, kittens, or any other small animals, into your kennels, to be killed and consumed by your dogs, if it was necessary or even just "better" for them?

Curious to know.

Do right-we had a golden retriever who died recently. When we got her we didn't have much money at all and not much information on dog foods. We fed her (cringe) Ol' Roy for at least the first seven years of her life along with table scraps. She lived to be 13 and when we moved we had to show her registration papers to the vet because whe didn't believe the dog was 12. Would I feed it again? No. But I don't think it's the end of the world either. My friend has a GSD with EPI and she feeds Purina. Mine with EPI eats EVO. She has to work to keep the weight OFF her dog I worry because I can't get it ON mine. I know there are variables in EPI but it seems how much you pay for food isn't one of them. JMO
