Elkoor, that dog has beautiful front extension!!

by Ibrahim on 07 September 2012 - 13:09

Elkoor, do you have a picture of him in stack or any side view picture? would you share his pedigree, does he have any show line ancestors? If he's only work then I guess his ancestors must have been of very good conformation, he looks marvellous in that gait picture.

Thanks
Ibrahim

Thank you Xeph and Ibrahim. I dont have any correct stacked pics yet, only natural stance. Since we are practicing stacking, I will try to get hubby to operate the camera (OMG!)

In the above pic he was fairly young. Since then he has "thightened" up a bit, and I havent seen him extend his shoulder as much. I started stretching him, maybe this will help.

Ibrahim, here is his pedigree http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=615144

He is not flawless. He has a short and somewhat steep croup. His shoulder angulation could be better too. And the german judge said at the show that he is "short coupled". I have no idea what that means....LOL (maybe a coment to his unerline being very tugged up?)

Xeph....his daughter has an even better extension, and OMG can she gait when she is fired up! I tried to get it on video, but she didnt want to cooperate. She is above german size standard and long. In a way she almost would be perfect for the AKC ring.

Coupling is same the length of loin, what is important is the back effective length between the mid point of top of shoulder blade to mid point of top of ileum bone, when loin (coupling) is too short then the effective back length gets short, Also when the shoulder blade is forward placed then the effective back length gets longer, same effect as long loin.

Many confuse correct length of back with short coupling as stretched GSDs are common and eye is used to them. Good correct length of coupling leads to effective drive transmission with minimal loss through the back. Too short in coupling can lead to restriction of drive and reach, as part of the drive will be lost as it goes up much higher than the topline, if at the same time dog's withers is low he would fall on the fore hand.

Hmmm....not sure if short coupling truly applies to him. Thank you for the explanation, Ibrahim!

I admid that he was restricted in movement, but it was more that he wanted to pull like an Ox and strung himself more often than not. You kinda can still see it in the above pic.

Ok, I got hubby to take some pics. This is the best one. He has filled out since the show pic was taken. Please forgive any imperfections (like my pocket hanging out after I took the ball out...LOL - he didnt tell me!)

Elkoor,  I really like that photo of your boy gaiting, eye-catching shot!
He's a very nice, very masculine looking male, what a head!  His muzzle is a bit too short for my tastes, and the planes aren't parallel, but it's still a very impressive looking, thick, large, All-Male head, lol!  He has a great expression too.  Lovely, rich pigment, eyes are a tad light but on him it looks good.  I don't see short coupling, what do you think Ibrahim?
I'd like to see the rear end positioned better before giving an opinion.
Overall, I really like your boy Regular Smile

As for the scooter I used...um, I don't remember what brand/model it was :(  I suck at silly things like that...I can tell you a breed of dog but I can't tell you a brand/make/model of a bike or car.
I bought it about 7-8 years ago from Walmart, it was the last one they had, their display model on clearance.  I did enjoy it with my dogs, one of my friend's kids really liked it so I gave it to him 2 years ago.
