I am a disabled woman living in New England, searching for a two year old GSD that will complete training with me to be a medical service dog. I have heard so many horror stories of people buying dogs who were shipped out to them only to find out that the dogs were displastic and poor-tempered. A medical service dog has to be super socialized and solid as a rock, as well as sound. I don't know where to go to get good advice without someone trying to make a buck off of me by selling me anything they have. Sorry this is so long. If anyone can help by recommending good trainers/kennels/dogs....any advice appreciated!?

Vom Brunhaus Thanks for the tip, I'm checking these out. I'm also still trying to learn all of the jargon, and standards. I have been in the horse business my whole life, but all my dogs have always been rescues, and I've never investigated "buying" a dog before, although I am advised by service dog trainers that rescues are not recommended for this...

New England, I must admit I'm not that well "hooked up" yet. :-) but Vom Brunhaus, points you toward the best consultants with Eichenluft and Bob O maybe Wscott00 as well ? I appreciate Vom Brunhaus faith in me, But I must respectfully turn this one over to those who have connections farther reaching than my own. However if there is anything I can do to help you please don't hesitate to ask !!! I would assist in any way that would I could. :-) Best of luck and keep us posted on how things turn out.

Echo, it would seem to me that now is the time to put up or ..... I f the philosophy of breeding that you have been expressing on this board is the real deal for you, and up until now I didn't doubt it, it seems to me that you would check this out and if you found it to be legit that you would ship this person a free dog suitable for her purposes. But maybe that's just me.

Who can afford to give away dogs for very long? I sent a dog for free to a guy back east somewhere, because he said he had a boy with shaken child syndrome (allegedly adopted), who needed a dog to take through a disabled / companion training program. This effing son-of-a-f-bitch lied to me. He never paid me for the cost of the shipping and health certificate, never sent the crate back. I was out a good $200 for it, and to add insult to injury, he had the shiny brass gonads to call me back later, asking for the papers, promising me that he had already "just" sent the payment to reimburse my shipping expenses. For some strange reason, I didn't believe him, so I decided to hold onto those papers until I got the money. Guess what? It never arrived! And I never heard from him again, either. I strongly suspect now that he was just a sh!t commercial breeder, and that he simply put other papers on her and bred her anyway, voila!.. "AKC puppies!". I don't believe that there was EVER a disabled boy! I'm sorry for people, and God knows I've tried to help them, but I'm tired of getting screwed! And if you want to talk about screw jobs, I can tell you that buyers are pretty good at dishing them out! Everyone wants a great dog, for cheap or nothing. But who pays the bills for all the dog food and veterinary care, etc.? Most breeders barely make ends meet, unless they are screw artists (and there are enough of them, too). So, here's the best idea.. Have the lady save her money up and find some local breeders where she can go out and look at the dogs. If she pays a fair price, and insists on getting a decent dog, nobody's feellings should be hurt. And I notice that she did not ask for charity, but OldNewGuyMC, maybe you have a nice dog that you want to give her?

by Thecowboysgirl on 25 November 2006 - 03:11

EchoMeadows, are you in New England? A service dog school has advised me to try and find a local breeder who I feel comfortable with that might be able to help me find a suitable dog. I also wanted to add that if I have serious discussions with any breeder I will be happy to put you in touch with my trainer and/or provide any proof of my situation that you would like. This is no small venture for me, and as much as I am looking for honesty I would be happy to reciprocate it.

DDR, I do not have a dog that I could send her, unfortunately. However if I was an active breeder I would be alert to this kind of OPPORTUNITY. There are ways of checking out the legitimacy of these needs. This woman sounds like she's working through an organization. The organization could be contacted and information verified. And again, if I was on a web board announcing my breeding philosophy for all to see, I would back it up with action. I don't have to explain what Echo's breeding philosophy is, you can look it up yourself. I love the third grade stuff that goes on on this board. "Oh yeah, well why don't YOU do it!"

Thecowboysgirl, I am in Oregon, United States. I don't have a 2 year old dog, If I did I would certainly offer for you to take a look. Our dogs have excellent temperaments and some would be very well suited for your desires, I think. We have some doing Therapy work now, But they are owned already. I don't have the 2 year old dog you desire. I am so sorry, I wish I could help you further. And yes I assumed you were looking locally, would be easier I would think given what your looking for. And that is why I respectfully bowed out as I don't know anyone in New England. If I did I surely would provide you with anything that would help you. Again I will offer if I can assist you in any way, Please don't hesitate to ask.

Echomeadows, I appreciate your kind posts already. Luckily I have time and am willing to do whatever research necessary to find the right dog. I will have some more questions tomorrow, as long as you don't mind. Tonight I'm too tired, and I have to turn in! Thanks to everyone here who has offered their advice and kind words.
