Good job Ruger 1;  I think your bases are co+ered (sorry a letter still does not work, new keyboard on the way today).   I would hold back on sending Prince until results return;  just in case you need to start new medication.  HOwe+er, I doubt it, but maybe.  Good luck  Nan

Can I ask why you're re-vaccinating a dog who is not known to be totally and completely 100%  healthy??

You won't give him heartworm preventives or wormers but you'll revaccinate an adult for distemper?  I'm totally lost on that logic. His chances of getting heartworm while not on preventives is a hell of a lot higher than getting distemper, (vaccinated or not), and you say "booster" and the dog is middle-aged, so how many distemper shots has he already had? And are we not investigating auto-immune issues? And the vet is still vaccinating him, while investigative bloodwork and other forms of diagnosis are being performed?

I don't expect an answer...just throwing that out there for food for thought.

Jen:  I would guess Kelly would require it;  just guessing.  However I do agree no more vaccine of any type until problem is resolved would be my choice but vet's do not think that way.  $$ involved.  Nan

Also Jenni78 I sent you a PM.

How old is Prince. The lab tests are fine. The borderline low K can be repeated at some time. If the dog is growing, a slightly high alk phos is to be expected. You should screen with TSH not T4....I would not worry about it, check the levels again next year when you collect blood.

P.S. My expertise is in lab tests, take it FWIW.

According to Dodds, TSH is not the way to go. That is for humans and maybe cats, not dogs. Deanna talk to her via email when her site is back up. A report it has been hacked recently.

Anyone selling large thyroid panels for routine testing is ripping you off...completely unnecessary. Thyroid testing is notoriously difficult to do right, even in humans. You are much better sending them off to Michigan as hexe advised.

Ruger 1 I am  lost at this point. Can you recapitulate what are the symptoms your dog has?  Why all these tests?

by 1GSD1 on 17 August 2013 - 20:08

I think vets that use Antech want $150 for the complete panel. I agree Michigan is fine. Point was Jean doesn't push TSH. I was saying that because you said Prince's owner should screen with TSH instead of T4. I was advised not to bother with TSH. That is all my post was about.

First off, I would like to respond to Jenni's post,,Is any dog totally and completely a 100 % healthy ?,, I don't expect you to answer, but it is  food for thought..;)

Prince's health issues have consisted of the fistula, pustules between the toes, and his bacterial skin infection related to flea bites.. . Prince had a minimum amount of puppy vaccinations and I actually didn't booster him at 12 months to the best of my knowledge..He has not had any vaccinations since he was about 9 months old, except for rabies twice,,,Tops wanted him to have a distemper and bordetella vaccination...I had the right to sign off on them both, but the vet felt it would be best if Prince received his distemper to be safe ...He would not had given me both vaccinations at the some time even if I had wanted them...He does not like over vaccinating and gave Prince the limited distemper vaccination ..I would not have vaccinated him at all, but I have to live with my conscience and I did what I felt I could live with..I can not go against my conscience and I do not haphazardly vaccinate or medicate...

No, I don't give wormers either because I have not needed it...I take a stool sample in for testing periodically to have it checked,,I do not treat for heart worm, but I do test for it and use safe topical repellents...Neither of Prince's vets felt he showed enough symptoms to warrant auto-immune testing,..One vet didn't even think that his T4 warranted any further testing..I have decided to test Prince because I want to cover all my bases ,,.I have the means to test him and he needed a heart worm blood draw anyway..There was no harm in drawing an extra vile..

There is my logic..:)

Also, Gudda I did send the tests to MI..He will,be 4 years in December

Prager,,Prince was only in need of blood work to check for heartworm.. Since we were drawing a sample I figured it would be a good time to check for thyroid problems mostly because of the aggression issues we have had with Prince..The only lab test we ran was CBC and T4,,I decided to have them send the extra blood sample vile to MI state for further thyroid testing because on the low T4 at 1.6...I obviously had money burning a hole in my pocket and would not be satisfied until it was gone,,This, according to my husband,,lol,,,
