CMills

by CMills on 03 November 2013 - 18:11

HI ALL, I HAVE A 6 MONTH OLD REMO SON FROM EUROPE, AND HE HAS THE WEIRDEST COAT I'VE EVER SEEN!  I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF HE'D BE CONSIDERED LONG COATED OR NOT.  I'VE SEEN ALOT OF COATS, AND ALL I'VE SEEN HAD FEATHERS ON THE BACKS OF THEIR LEGS, AND IN/ON THEIR EARS THEY HAVE LONG TUFTS OF HAIR. THIS GUY HAS HAIR ABOUT 3" ON HIS BODY, BUT NO LONG HAIR ON HIS EARS, HEAD, OR ON THE BACKS OF HIS LEGS.  WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS??  HIS COAT ISN'T THE CRISP, ROUGH TYPE I'M USED TO, ITS SOFTER AND SILKY.  WHATCH THINK?? SORRY THE PICS ARE FUZZY, BUT THATS ALL I HAVE TODAY? YOU CAN SEE BETTER PICS AT WWW.STARVIEWKENNEL.COM  UNDER HIS NAME, BETOVEN FIXFRUTTA.

He looks like a plush coat. He may have a very thin undercoat and that is why his coat feels silky. If it's not thick and rough, I'd bet he's either not got his undercoat yet (he's a pup) or he's going to have a thin undercoat. I would assume he's not going to shed a lot but only you can really answer that.

I'd guess plush or "open"at the very least, or maybe coated and his feathers will come later. I don't have enough expertise in show line coats to say for sure. Working line puppies at about 2-3 weeks old, I can say w/almost absolute certainty, but once they get this old, it's kind of a waiting game. The coated pups my female has had don't show tufts except by their ears at that age; they show up much later when their full coats come in. I've also had some that never have feathering- they're just longer-haired all over, but again, I know next to nothing about show line coats so I'm just guessing.

Thanks Dani and Jenni, I know hes not 'short haired"  but was just wondering if his hair would continue growing past 6 months old. in the past my pups had all the coat they were going to get by 5 months old. Either way, thanks for answering!

I have had 3 pups like this but they all had the same longer coat when younger none had the tight normal coat that your pup shows here on the PDB on his pedigree.  Did you take that picture, if so then maybe he will look more normal later on

They were sold as pets but shown for fun and all the Judges knocked them for the coats.  As they aged  some feathering came in and light ear tuffs on two of them all had very bushy tails.

Yes I took the picture, and I guess only time will tell. When I got him at 4 months old, I saw his littermate sister who was long coated, and there was a very distinct difference in him and her. She had feathering in/on her ears, and along backs of her legs. He didn't have that.  I did have a male pup I sold as a pup with a longer coat like this boy, and when I saw him at a year old I didn't even recognize him, he was a standard short coated adult. Coats can be so puzzling. thanks

^^^ "Coats can be so puzzling."

I don't think they are, really, CMills.   Seems pretty clear to me
 you have been sold a dog with a technically 'incorrect' coat ;
and a Remo son, to boot !  Hhmmm ... maybe they 'knew';  or maybe
it is nobody's fault, but genetics.

You have to remember that in Europe we do not really acknowledge
'plush'.  There is Standard,  'correct' and 'incorrect' ;  and then there
is Longstockhair,  and the undesirable 'long open'.

You also need to remember, as other posters said, your dog is still a
puppy and does not yet have his full adult coat.

Knowing GSL GSDs, I would be very surprised if, once he has been
through a couple of moults, he suddenly gets feathers and trousers.
IMO this is not a long OR truly longstockhaired coated dog;  I think it
likely to be a pup with a SOFTER coat than the Standard calls for.
(Should be slightly 'harsh' to the touch, not velvety.)
Hence the extra length of some hairs in the 'puppy' coat, and the
waviness.  When he has his full coat through, the length may shorten
a bit, but not by much, and there will probably always be that softness and
wavyness about it. If I'm right, not a dog to win Shows with, or breed from
unless he becomes outstanding in other respects, at least in Europe.  In
America, who knows ?

Sorry if this sounds a bit hard, but I think from your various posts you seem
to be someone who values 'no frills' factual answers.
Does not stop him being a fun companion or a good Working/Sport animal.

Best wishes, for you and him in the future.

this is a long coated puppy, he will get more feathering as he gets older, in long coats there are longer and shorter coats, just like in stock coats, you call the somewhat longer stock coats plush in the US but in Europe there is no such thing, it is either long coat or stock coat.

DNA would give you the answer.

He's a long coat, looks like someone gave him a nice trim job too :)
