That sounds much better than she was when you got there tonight. Rose Glad to hear she's still on the antibiotics.  How's the eye movement?

If her ears are still funky, suggest you order some of the Zymox  [w/hydrocortisone or w/out, either way] and have your mom put some of that in her ears once a day--need to get that crap out of there, and since the vet has already checked the eardrums and they're intact, it's safe to use.

sunshine's suggestion to support both front and back for the time being is spot-on; I've found it even more helpful to make a figure-8 harness to support the front end using a leash. Clip the snap end to the hand loop to make a full circle around her thorax, just behind her elbows, then cross the top of that circle across her withers to create a figure 8; drop the top of the figure 8 over her head so that it is situated at chest-level, and then grab the resulting harness w/one hand at "X" point over the withers so you can help her with her balance and strength while you support her hind end with a towel sling. Take it slow and she should be able to walk a bit with that help.

I still feel that Jewel is recovering at a reasonable pace, based on what you describe, and 'drama mama' can hopefully ease up a bit on the anxiousness, as that stress transmits to the Golden Girl on top of what she's already dealing with. Thumbs Up

Ok, good news that the ears have fully been addressed and she is on an antibiotic.

Keep in mind (tell your mom) that carrying her doesn't help- when they get her up, make sure to put her feet on the ground so she can try to balance herself. Being carried and put different places doesn't help her orientation. She needs to be able to feel ground and see horizons for balance to be regained.

OK, I'm home now, I can type more.

The trouble is not in supporting her, I don't think, as I had both ends up  at one point, but it is like she has no control over her legs, if that makes sense? With all fours on the ground, she struggles with them so much that they go every which way, and she eventually gives up and just wants to lay down. When they take her outside she wears her harness, and they use that as a handle, but it's the same way. Even when she was lying on her side and I was petting her, I got her "tickle spot" and her leg started thumping, but in doing so, that leg crossed her other leg and they got tangled... if that makes sense.

When I was there she went potty, a full bladders worth, on the blanket, puppy pads and newspapers they have laid down, but I don't think she has pooped in a few days (possibly since this all started on Thurs last week), but she hasn't had much to eat anyway.

Her eyes are not jittering anymore.

She is very weak and tired... The only time I've ever seen her like this was when she had her pyo. I went and sat down with her a bit later and started petting her and she made no move to get up or even see who it was. She is not dehydrated, for what it's worth - her skin bounces right back, and her gums change back really quick when you press on them. She was laying with her right ear (thats the nasty one) up, so I went ahead and cleaned it out... she did not move or groan or anything which is very unlike her. I got what I could of the black gunk out, but looking in her ear with a flashlight, there is a lot of it in her actual ear canal - too far down for me to get at, or even comfortably make the attempt... but I could see her ear drum, so it's not "full" I guess. Hexe, I will look into that stuff... do you suggest the spray, solution, or cream? It is her right ear thats infected, but everything "wrong" is to the left. Her head is tilted 45 degrees to the left... when this all started it was turning to the left that was her "down fall"... left left left.

It was a battle tonight. I'm not sure how much more time they are going to give her, no matter what I say and relay from here. Cry Smile

Heh, you know, I turned 21 in June this year, but still have yet to have any alcohol... but my mom just might drive me to it! lol

Dawulf, go with the Zymox Otic solution; the spray & cream formulas are for skin & wound care, not ears.

What you see with her when you try to get her walking is normal for the early stage of recovery; she still has a disruption to her ability to orient & direct her legs, which is why the double support of front and back is so important-the caregivers need to serve almost like a puppeteer, moving her legs for her through use of the sling & harness.

If necessary, you can use a children's glycerine suppository to stimulate her bowels.

Wish I lived closer so I could help you advocate for her with the family. I know it feels to them as If it's been weeks and weeks already, but I hope they will give her at least a full month from the time of the event before they concede the efforts.

Keith Grossman

Does the food she's getting have corn or wheat in it?  Any problems I ever had with gunky, yeasty ears was resolved by removing those ingredients from the diet.

Keith, I've been trying to tell them that for years. Her teeth are bad now, so she can't eat the Science Diet anymore - which I was happy about [ for no more SD; not her bad teeth], hoping they'd take my suggestion and go with something better, but nah. They go with canned Pedigree.

Well, guys, something is working! They took her outside with her harness, and the towel sling, and made her walk. They then gave her a little break, while mom called me to tell me, and while I was on the phone with her, Jewel GOT UP ON HER OWN, took 3 steps, and then SQUATTED AND WENT POTTY. She then moved away a bit, fell over, then GOT BACK UP almost immediately, took a few more steps, then bent over and pooped for the first time since last week! She then started to walk towards my moms boyfriend, and went down again, and started rolling around in the grass! How's that for progress! Mom also said she's been all smiles tonight, wagged her tail and tried to scoot over to her when she got home, and has been scooting and crawling around a lot today. So I'm hoping this all eases her mind a bit, and helps to reassure her that she WILL get better.
