Jenni, I know, both of those happy dances are hard to beat! Teeth Smile

Dawulf, I dug out something you can use to advocate for Jewel if your mom starts fretting that Jewel isn't recovering quickly enough again.  This paper is long and very technical, and will bore most who decide to read it, but the most important parts of it are found on the bottom of page 332, in the section titled "Behavioral recovery during regeneration" which emphasizes that the recovery process WILL be slow and patience is required, along with making sure the patient is being given enough stimulation to help the vestibular system reoreint itself.

LOL! Love the happy dances. :)

Thank you for the article, Hexe, I will definitely use that as ammo if needed!

I didn't get to talk to her much today, but I got a text from her saying that they were cooking dinner, and all of the sudden here comes Jewel, wobbling into the kitchen. :) I suspect she will be back to playing with her toys in no time! Thumbs Up

Jewel has clearly become a mascot of the PDB Main forum, Dawulf!  We've been emotionally invested in her well-being since you first introduced us to her when she was having nasty skin & coat issues, and she's got that smile you can't help but fall for.  Heart   Tottering into the kitchen on her own is a huge improvement, and the more she's encouraged to move around and orient herself, the better--suggest your mom hard-boil some eggs and chop them into medium-sized cubes and then lay a short track with them for Jewel to follow...it's an excellent form of physical therapy for dogs recovering from vestibular events.

In a bizarre twist, I've got a 12 week old Welsummer pullet that is having a bout of vertigo right now. Off to look in her ears and see if there's anything amiss in there. Eating, drinking, socializing with the rest of the flock, but walks like she's been on a three-day bender. So Jewel has an avian partner in recovery here.

Just wanted to do a quick update, since it's been a few weeks.

Jewel is continuing to improve! Thumbs Up She is back to eating her regular food, after a couple weeks of being spoiled, and having her dinner cooked for her. It snowed and she's been loving that! She got down and rolled a bit the other day, then got back up and PRANCED around with all the snow in her coat!

Her eyesight, though, seems to have gotten worse, and she is very easy to startle if something gets in her way that isn't supposed to be. She sees with her nose now. Their cat is making things difficult for her... they are not friends like my cat and Jewel are. Last night when I was over there, the cat jumped out of nowhere and smacked Jewel in the face, scaring her and causing her to turn, lose her balance, and whack her head on the pillar! Poor baby!

Also, last night, Jewel drug all of her toys out, and brought me her shark and her owl so I could "tug" with her before she gutted them a bit. She then grabbed her one bone, and tossed it in the air, half way across the room like she used to do with her kibble. I can't tell you how many times we wound up with kibble in our hair/plates/shoes/bookshelfs/couches/Christmas trees/etc. etc. etc. when she was younger... she would always play with her first bite of kibble before she'd eat... and God forbid you touch it or get involved in her game in any way, or you'd ruin the fun and she'd just have to eat it and go back to her bowl. I haven't seen her toss something like that in MONTHS... great to see!

Her head is still a bit on the tilt-y side... and her balance isn't excellent but it is improving. She still stumbles a bit, and bumps into things, but overall is doing well with it. Oh, she has learned how to do stairs in a way that she is comfortable with again. She was VERY scared to do them for awhile there, and had to be helped down especially. She literally takes them one step at a time... all 4 paws on the same one before she goes for the next.

Mom says Jewel's poop is getting blacker, so I suppose her liver is getting worse, however.
